Couple questions

I have a new Remington 700 BDL custom deluxe, the one with the engraved receiver, chambered in 300 win. It has got the gloss bluing on the receiver and I was wondering if it could be media blasted to more of a matte finish without ruining the engraving.
Also is the boltface too large, thinking of using it for a donor action 6.5-284 build. Even though I hate to as I've never shot it, got it in 2001. Thanks info.

Any type of blasting can take away from the sharpness of the engraving because it would dull the bottom of the engraving. You could do a bead blast on the barrel only and reduce the amount of shiny
surface but in reality the game only see the crown most of the time.

If you want to use it as a donor, Look at some of the WSMs or SAUMs (They have the magnum bolt face)
And if there is enough shank you could re use the barrel in it and go with a 300 WSM buy setting back the shoulder and chamber.

Also if you want a 6.5x284 you can buy a new bolt with the correct bolt face and a M16 extractor as cheep as modifying the old one.

Haven't ever tried it, but if you just very lightly smoke the receiver with glass beads, it might make a satin finish without removing all the bluing and blurring the engraving. I would try a spot on the bottom of the receiver, or if you have a blued barrel or other part, try it on them first. Don't know if walnut hulls would dull the gloss or not. They might.
Don't try it with sand or al-ox. You can't go light enough to prevent them from taking off blue and dulling engraving.

I agree with JE on the bolt. Going down on bolt face size is best done by just getting a new bolt with the correct face, unless you can find someone who will swap a long action .473" face bolt for your long action .535" face bolt.

If you rebarrel to 6.5 x .284 you'll need the bolt first, so headspace can be set to it.

Thanks for the info, this site has ruined me...

I started wanting a 6.5x284 but after a little thinking and your suggestions I'm leaning towards a 264 win (which I believe my magnum bolt face should work with). I'll keep the blued reciever and do a satin finish stainless barrel, 22",11* crown, 5r or 5c. Lightweight taper. i'll keep the bdl stock and may replace with a cdl takeoff. i'll bed everything, work the trigger to 2lbs. all of this inspired by the sheep head engraved on th bottom metal.


....But then again maybe i'll do a 7wsm

The .264 Win is my all-time favorite 6.5mm cartridge. You can't go wrong if you put a quality stainless barrel on it. Don't crown the barrel anything less than 24" in this caliber. 26" is a good compromise.

You are correct. Your bolt face will work just as it is.

Great problem to have, trying to decide what to build.
