Christmas present found

I have gained a little interest in photography from the exposure to this site....all I need is another hobby. I had mentioned to my wife that I wanted a decent camera. I dont even know why she tries to hide stuff, I am a hunter, and I am best at hunting hidden christmas presents. Okay here is my question. She bought me a fujifilm s8000. It has 18x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom with image stabilization and 8 mega pixal whatever that means. Is this a decent starter camera for a novice? I really only want it to take deer pictures from 30 to 800 yards, will this be an okay camera for that purpose?
