I dont know if this is the proper place to post this but i am wanting to build a 25-06 and wondering how i would go about doing so. would like remington 700 action, short or long? other then that what else would i need? barrel, stock, new to this but want to try. thanks

A Remington 700 is a good start. You can use a short action if you want it single feed but I would recommend a long action. Buy a donor rifle in a 270 or 30-06 and have a smith put on a 25-06 barrel of choice and put it in a stock of choice.

That is the easy way, you can also go through and true the action up, bed the rifle in a really good stock, PT&G bolt or have yours reworked. Or you could get a custom action like a Stiller and build one from the ground up.

You can build the rifle exactly the way you want it, only limiting factor is time and money. Some parts have lead times and most smiths do too.

For the 25-06 you will need a long action. You will need the following items that I can think of right off hand: Action, bolt, barrel, trigger, stock, rings, and scope. Then you need someone good to put it together for you.
I have a 25-06 so don't think of this as a negative. Why would you want to build one? Consider a 6.5-05 [or other 6.5's]. Same case blown out from .25 caliber to .26 caliber. Berger bullets to 140 gr with MUCH better BC's than anything available in the .25 caliber. Now with the matrix 160's ..... You can download for varmit's just like the 25-06. Same powder capacity. Recoil seems the same to me.... Can't find a good reason not to do the 6.5-06 except for off the shelf cartridge availability. If that's a concern then look at some of the other 6.5's. Like I said I own both and the 25-06 is just sitting..... The bad part is I just found a load that it gives a 1 hole group with 3 shots at 100 yards..... Probably need to sell as its just sitting in the safe.
Good luck with your build. A good smith will help you acquire the parts and put together a great rifle. Bruce

Hey bud, It's a big deal building a custom. I have built 2, both on mauser actions, and both have douglas barrells. First when i built my 220 swift, I had to decide what bullets i wanted to shoot. Then you can decide what twist you need. After that, how heavy does it need to be, will you be carrying it around?? That will determine how heavy your barrel can be and how long. This is a good place to start. Oh yea, I shot a 1/2, 4 shot group once at 300 yards with my 1:9 twist swift!!!!

is it just cheaper to buy one? i have a few rifles already (300RUM sendero, model 700 30-06, and savage 111 270) and i really want a 25-06 so i thought maybe it would be cheaper to build one. not sure. thanks

generally cheaper to buy, unless you can do the work yourself or if you are buying a high end rifle like a Cooper. then you maybe able to build one cheaper. However you have a savage 111 you should be able to do a switch barrel rig with it, at a lower cost than anything, All you should need is the pre-fit barrel, maybe a second barrel nut, headspace guage and the tools to change it.

good luck

If your goal is to be as cheap as possible then buy something off the shelf. If you want something built to your specs you can do a semi/full custom and it still might be in your price range. It all depends on your goals and budget.

I have one here Im working. I went with the AI version and dont have all my casing's fireformed yet...but i still can shoot the straight versions.

Rem 700 action that had been worked over...the long action...Laminated stock from Stockys....factory trigger thats been worked on....BRUX barrel.....and a Nikon variable scope.

Since I already have a 260 thats HB this rifle ...should I decide on doing it.....would become a deer ..antelope gun.

Hey bud, depends on how cheap you can find components. If you can find a good mauser action for around 100$$ then you can build it pretty cheap. I barreled that swift i built for about 475$$ You can put alot heavier barrel on if you build one. But Iam sure in the end you can buy one cheaper. My timney trigger breaks a little over a pound [1.2]. You won't get that out of a factory gun.
