I've been fiddlin' around with the 6.5 Creedmoor in some local long distance events with a stock Ruger77 Target rifle with very good results, and have been wondering if anybody is using this round for hunting yet?
I am envisioning getting a Ruger Hawkeye as a hunting rig with maybe a
Leupold CDS scope....maybe taking a couple of inches off the stock 26" barrel...I know I'll lose velocity, but am willing to do so for the conditions I hunt in here in the Northeast.
My gunsmith is located in a building on Rugers property so it is an easy way to go. (He built my elk rifle for me on a 700 action so I've been that route too.)
Just figuring I can kill 2 birds with one stone cause it will help me reduce the amount of cartridges I reload for too.

Thanks,
johnny

Hey,

I know you posted this a long time ago and may have already figured this out yourself, but as I just recently used my 6.5 Creedmoor to take my first buck, I thought I would let you know that it worked great!

My rifle is pretty close to what you describe. It was my first custom build, using Savage action, 26" Criterion barrel, and Boyd's stock. Leupold 4.5-14x40 CDS scope, Zeiss range finder, click card made with long range ballistic calculator on Vortex website used to determine clicks needed for shot. Ammo was hand loaded, 140gr Berger over H4350 powder. Shot good sized 4 x 5 buck at 480 yds across a canyon in a cross breeze. Big fella took about 10 slow steps then tipped over dead.

Bergers do everything they say they will. Cut wind, shoot flat, destroy internal organs. One of the more fun things I've ever done. Hope this helps!

Second pic is from where I shot. He was in bright yellow grass flat on other side.

Nice buck and great shootin'!!

I ended up getting the Hawkeye matte stainless/ 26" barrel and then
dropping it into a Ruger Compact laminate stock....I know it sounds weird,
but it really fits nice when in winter clothing, and makes for a real nice light weight carry rifle.
I topped this off with the Swarovski Z-3 4x12x50 with their Ballistic Turret System.
A bedding job and tweaked the trigger down to 2-1/2 lbs and she'll now put the first 4 shots into .2"@ 100 with a consistent 5th flyer spreading the groups out to .75" (roughly) . Funny thing is, this rifle shoots better than my target rifle; which shoots pretty awesome in its own right.
I too am using 140 Berger VLD's and H-4350..(41grs)

The only game I've taken so far has been groundhogs and some mangy coyotes, but they have all been shot with the same load...(all DRT) Deer season opens up soon so I can't wait.

I'll post some gun porn soon...

Good shootin'
