A well done article I happened across while doing a web search. It also helps one to understand why the 30 degree shoulder is on the modern case designs as well as less body taper. this might be more help to the younger reloaders. It can also help one understand how pressures could be increased in the newer cases compared to the older tapered cases. Something Ackley learned many years go. Enjoy.

 
Benefits continue up to the area of 37* shoulder angle. I like the sharper angles at 40* vs 30* as it seems to mitigate brass flow better.

Few realize that the double radius on the Weatherby design stops brass flow in it's tracks, better than the 40* shoulder angle in my experience.
 
Thanx again seebeeken. Have always been a fan of mr Ackley and his accomplishments for his time. Without our testing equip of today! Jon Barsness has also impressed me for his research and time involved. And always wondered about the double radius shoulder. If mr Weatherby knew about brass flow when he was starting and doing his product line.
 
In regards to the polished chamber versus rough chamber part of the article, I feel that could also apply to nickeled brass versus raw brass.

Re: Weatherby, I always that the double radius was to differentiate his cartridges from everything else. Plus, there's no "corners" for smoother "flow".

Re: 40 degree shoulder, more volume plus slower powder requires a longer barrel to achieve the gain, I don't know. 4350 vs 7828 vs 4064 vs rl-19 vs rl-21, it would take a bit to prove / disprove but seems possible.

I have a 20" .260AI. Pushes a 140 Hyb @ 2914 w. Alpha brass & H4350. Tough for a 26" .260 Rem to keep up with that.
 
Lance, you could call it DONE if you did not like to play and experiment with different stuff.
Well...we both know I like to tinker...and when gains like this can be had...

I do not like high-polish chambers. Gunsmiths like the high polish because it keeps their phone from ringing from dissatisfied customers. 320 grit is as high as I will go, and I have even used Scotch Bright on a chamber with no adverse effects.

I like for my cases to be able to grip the wall to cut down on bolt thrust. PO Ackley spoke about this very issue. This issue may be like picking the black specks out of the pepper, so be it.

Sherman designs have less taper than Ackley, for that reason.
