Just picked up an 8 lb keg of 8700 dirt cheap. I know its not made anymore but 8 lbs will last me a while. Thinking of loading 210 Bergers and 200 Partitions out of my 300 Rum. Anyone have info on this powder or some loading data they could share? Was also wandering how it rates in temperature sensitivity and ES?

Thanks Roy

Roy, I have data from the 2005 Accurate arms flyer here that should get you started.

with a 200 swift a- frame aa 8700 starts at 99.9 and tops at 111.0

with a 220 sierra rn aa8700 starts at 95.4 and tops at 106.0

I load the 190 hornady bt in my 300 ultra with 104.0 of wc872 for a average load. I've also loaded the 180 hornady with 110 of wc872 with good results. wc872 is another of the extremely slow 50bmg type ball powders and it burns at the same rate as 8700 in most guns.
I'd actually start at the start charges as 8700 sometimes is rather strong by mid-way up the ladder. It is moderately temp sensitive and I wouldn't look for an absolutely top load, but it will do very well if it likes your bullet and bore. I've gotten both 1/2" AND 6" groups with these powders at 100 yards, depending on if it likes what's going on. More bullet weight(load on the powder) = happier powder for this stuff.

My Accurate manual #2 Revised list 8700 for bullets from 125 gr through 220 gr in the 300 RUM.
For the Speer 200 gr SP is list start load as 95.4 grs and Max as 106.0
For Speer 200 Grand Slam start 99.0 and Max 110.0
For 200 Swift AF start 99.9 max 111.0
For Sierra 220 RN start 95.4 max 106.0

All the max loads are listed as Compressed so you really can't get too much powder into a case to really be over pressure most likely.
