What powders would you look to for the 165-180 class? I'm thinking of retumbo, h1000, or Rl23. Which ones would you start with and what primers?

H1000 for me too with 180 Hybrids. Super stable for my hunting rifle is the main reason I use it. RL23 and RL26 give me slightly better speeds, but H1000 is so accurate and clean, I won't switch.

With 180's I have used H1000 and Reloder 26. I get about 75-100 fps more with Reloder 26, and in my case got better accuracy and lower s.d., but H1000 has produced some good results for other people. With a 26" barrel, expect 2900 or better with 180's. If you use Reloder 26, it is very possible you will get 3000 or better. Currently shooting HBN coated 180 VLD's at 3060 fps out of a 26" Remington 700 long range.

On a side note, I have also used these powders with 175 eld-x, 168 vld's, and 162 eld-x out of a couple other rifles, and both work well, good accuracy and consistency, just flip flops which one gets lower s.d.'s and better accuracy depending on the gun, but Reloder 26 is always faster.

I've been using retumbo for my brother's but after testing RL26, I will be runnig that in my own 7mag and most likely his as well..

So Ive experimenting with 180 hybrids and 180 ELDM's. I've been using Retumbo thus far and only getting around 2860 at even 72.2 grains which is way over max. I have a 24" barrel so I'm guessing I don't have enough barrel length and am just wasting powder the higher I go. I do have a pound of H1000 but everything I read it will have a slower velocity than Retumbo. I'm wondering what I should try next thinking maybe RL26 or 7828 SSC. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Reloder 26 will likely get your best speed of those listed. Normally you get 20-40 fps per inch, and I achieved 3060 with hbn coated 180's and 3015 with naked 180's in a 26". If we cut this barrel down to 24", we would get about 2980-3020 with the same load, or 2935-2975 with the naked bullets. I would think you would be able to break 2900, possibly even up to 3000 with 180's and Reloder 26, depending on where your best accuracy is and how fast of a barrel you have.

Just tried again, my best groups with 180 ELDM yesterday sucked today.
I tried 180 hybrids 71.4 Retumbo .015 off of the lands which was my best yesterday bad groups today.
180 hunting VLD's. 70.2 retumbo touching the lands 5 holes touching. So at least I have some hope, maybe this rifle just likes the bullets touching. I didn't chrono today left the magnetospeed off to see if maybe it was messing with my groups. Keep the advice coming I'm sure I'll get it figured out just frustrating right now. Thanks

1:9 Krieger 24". FTE brake not sure what the contour is.

Did you use the ocw method to find your charge weight or did you just keep moving up randomly?
