I picked up some 162 grain and 175 grain ELDXs. Hornady says the COL for the 162s is 3.070" and the 175s at 3.265". The ogive measurement for the 162s is 3.366" and the ogive for the 175s is 3.532". That's a .166" difference. Why are the 162s sat so deep? They look like they are stuffed way into the case. Couldn't they be loaded at the same Ogive as the 175s?

PS: I have not shot either of them yet as I'm waiting for my build. Just loaded up several with .2 grain increments with N565 to run a ladder test.
 
Each bullet line has a different Ogive measurement. That's why most people when reloading measure off the lands and seat bullets that way. Case base to ogive measurements don't mean much without a measurement from the lands.

Those measurements from hornady are just a saami spec. I never use them, I always load the eldx .020 off the lands. Or at max mag length -.020, for reliable feeding.
 
My best guess is that's a typo in Hornady's data. The Hodgdon website gives 3.270" for the 162 ELDX, which is a heck of a lot more realistic than 3.070". That first 0 should likely be a 2...

Each COAL and BTO will be a little different for different shaped ogives and tips and such, but there's just no plausible reason there would be a 0.2" difference between two bullets of similar design with only a 13 grain weight difference.

I'd be surprised if there was a 0.2" difference between a 162 grain wadcutter and a 175 grain solid copper VLD...

The 175 is a very long bullet

This is what I was wondering. Even not knowing the measurements to my lands the ogives between the two bullets should be close. They just look like they are seated too deep as well.

That is bizarre if that's what factory 7PRC ammo looks like. Saami spec is 3.34 max COAL. if you gotta stuff bullets in the case that far it is kinda defeating the purpose of the cartridge. Did you get your rifle built on a long action or chambered for a specific bullet on a mid length?

I went off of what hornady recommended for the 162 grain eldx. I think it's a typo like mentioned above.

I noticed this about two months ago and after looking at additional data realized it was a Typo.
 
Do a light neck tension, load a 162 long and do a 'jam' and see what ur CBTO & COAL measures so you know for ur rifle where that bullet hit ur lands.

I never use published info for lengths and instead measure MY chamber and set everything based on how it is cut
