saw a article in shooting times where john burns shot a elk at 1000 plus yds using a stif load and 180 berger bullets.any thoughts on his stif load/says it is hitting 2950 fps or so.

Not surprising. The 180 VLD and 7RM combo has proven to be extremely effective, however, I would expect a max+ load of Retumbo and a 28" bbl to run at least 3000 fps. My max 180 VLD/Retumbo load runs 3030-3060 fps depending on powder lot. My max 180 VLD/RL33 load runs well past 3100 fps.

If I may ask, would you mind sharing those load recipes? I have a 28" Pac-Nor, sendero conture on my mod 700 rem 7 mag! Looking for a good load for the 175-180's. Thanks

I push 168's out of a 26" barrel at 3,115 with a slightly higher than max charge of 7828 SSC. So, I'm pretty sure I can push 180's around 3,000 without really straining too hard.

I've got H-1000, Retumbo, RL-33, an 7828 to try. 71gr of H-1000 with a 168 was over 3100plus. I've got some 175's an 180's that I want to get tuned in. If I can get 3000plus with them, I will be a happy camper!

I use 70 grains Retumbo with a fed 215M in Win brass. For RL33 I use 77.0 grains also in Win brass with a Fed 215M. Both are loaded to kiss the lands.

Thank you Sir!!! That will make my 7 mag very happy!! Lol. Been trying to push the 175/180's over 3050 an 3100 will be even better! Thanks Again!

Correction

His load was a 180 vld in front of 73gr of retumbo with a remington 9-1/2 with .330" free bore.

Guns and ammo march 2010.

That's a stout load. I'd be really surprised if it was only running 2950 fps. Most guys arent' runnng that much Retumbo with 168s let alone 180s.
