6.5/300wsm

Kirby recently built me a 6.5 WSM on a Win 70 using a PacNor 1 in 9" polygonal for antelope and coues.

I have been playing with the 130 Accubonds and 130 Scirocco IIs with H1000 and Ramshot Magnum Powders, Federal 215M primers, and WW 270WSM brass sized down.

With the 130 Accubonds and H1000, velocities went from 2857fps with 58.0gr to 3240fps w/ 66.0gr (about 40fps increase/gr).

With the 130 Accubond and Magnum, velocities went from 2861fps w/ 59.0gr, to 3087fps w/ 65.0gr.

Using the 130 Scirocco and H1000, velocities went from 3075fps w/ 63.0gr, to 3198fps w/ 66.0gr.

Using the 13 Sciroco and Ramshot Magnum, velocities went from 3088fps w/ 65.0gr, to 3253fps w/ 68.0gr.

Most accurate has been the 130 Scirocco w/ 66.5gr Ramshot Magnum. I am still playing around with seating depth.

Nice to see you guys are having good results with the slower powders. I started shooting one in 2000. I had a friend who worked at winchester and was able to get me some brass. I don't think you could even buy a short mag at the time. I always had luck with RL19 60 gr. and 142gr sierra's. That combo got me small group 3.??" at the 1000 yard nationals in 2002 and first place four man light gun team at the 1000 yard nationals at Quantico in 2003. Maybe I'll try some of the loads suggested in my 6.5-300 hunting rifle.

I put a 6.5wsm together on a Savage 110 large shank action, a PacNor 28" straight taper, SS super match, 1:8 twist, 5 groove.

I have loaded test rounds with 140g SMK's, resized Winchester 270wsm brass, GM215M primers, COL is 2.935", .010" off lands,

here are my test loads started as;
Retumbo 65.0 - 70.0g in .5g increments
H869 66.5 - 72.5g in .5g increments

after talking to some on the boards, I have since loaded a few more rounds with lower charges!

Retumbo 62.0 - 70.0g in .5g increments
H869 65.0 - 72.5g in .5g increments
I will stop when experiencing pressure signs

I have played around with mine a little (when I am not changing diapers!) with the 129 gr SST moly coated shot through a 26" Lilja barrel on a Savage action. Norma 270 WSM brass and Federal 215GM primers.

I was hoping for 3300 fps and worked up 1 grain at a time with 7828SSC. Temp was 70 degrees. 66 gr gave me 3318 fps but there were light extractor marks on the case head and primer was flat. Bolt lift was easy but that still sounds like too much pressure for me.

I switched to H1000 and again went up 1 grain at a time. 64 grains gave me 3200 fps with round primer and no extractor marks. Like RedRabbit said, I was gaining around 40 fps per grain with that powder. I intend to load up a couple more of 65 and 66 gr when I get time. I think 3300 fps would be pretty much top end velocity with reasonable pressures and good case life.

Accuracy should be very good, as the rounds went on paper almost perfectly in a vertical line for the first 4 powder charges with maybe 0.2" horizontal spread at 100 yds. The last one opened it up to about 0.5" horizontal spread but that one had a mangled nose from being pulled from another case.

I intend to try some 130 gr AB's when I get my hands on some, but the SST should be a decent whitetail bullet. Killed one doe with it and it performed nicely on a quartering away shot.

I have just read this post and noticed that you used up to 70 gr of Retumbo.I went to my bench and tried it and dumped 1/4 gr on the bench,so I tried to vibrate it in no go again.Pray tell us all how you can get 70 gr Retumbo in a 6.5 WSM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have not tested 70.0g of Retumbo in the 6.5wsm yet! CAUTION!! this is most likely too hot!! I just have it on the top end of my ladder test. My cartridge overall length is 2.937" and using 140g SMK (boattail) it is slightly compressed but fit fine.

I am also using these loads in a long action so seating them long and still fit the magazine

I am using Sierra 142gr Matchking with 71gr of IMR 5010 with a velocity of 3050 with excellent results. My gun has a long throat so not much of the bullet is in the case, just the neck. IMR 5010 is a surplus powder thats cheap. I am not sure were it is on a powder burn chart but its pretty slow burning. I would guess a little slower than Retumbo.

I took out my Lyman 1200 and Retumbo and weighed out 70.0 grains again to doublecheck ...... 70.0g in a Winchester 270wsm case resized to 6.5wsm came just below the neck-shoulder jct. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
