.300 RUM: 240gr SMK + H1000

Can anybody with experience with H1000 + 240gr SMK in the .300 RUM chime in with some loads to get me started... not having luck searching for it here or on Google. The Sierra manual only gives load data for H1000 up to the 220gr SMKs. I found one reloading data site that had some user-submitted loads from one guy, but I'd like to have a second and third opinion before I start exploding things near my face :)

Want to try H1000 due to it's apparently excellent temperature tolerance and Mr. Carlock's luck with it in the EDGE.

Thanks!

I don't have direct experience with the 240 and the RUM.

But I ran some quickload numbers for you to use as a data point to compare against any other data you find.

26" barrel
240gr SMK
H1000
80gr 50985psi 2586fps
81gr 53000psi 2615fps
82gr 55087psi 2644fps
83gr 57254psi 2672fps
84gr 59503psi 2701fps
85gr 61840psi 2729fps
86gr 64267psi 2757fps

64977psi is the max spec for the 300RUM.

The loads I have seen on the net for the 300RUM always appear to be above the max that quickload calculates. But for what it's worth, quickload agrees very closely with the Hodgdon reloading data for the 220SMK (velocity and pressure).

Hope this data helps, sorry I don't have direct info for you.

Thank you sir! Incredibly helpful -- and very closed to the "user entered" data I had already come across.

Very much obliged!

A little bit belated... but:

Right around 2750 fps from my 30" barrel -- I couldn't be happier! (If you were wondering, it is a 4 round group instead of five because I was doing round robin with seating depths and ran out of light.)

Thanks for the help!

IMHO a slower powder like US-869 would be worth a look in the RUM with 240 grain bullets

Thanks for the tip... I intend to look into some more powders at some point...

I decided to play with H1000 first because of the luck Mr. Carlock has had with it with the .338 Edge, and because of its consistency across different temperatures.

I'm pretty confident that there is another node I can get to safely with H1000, just haven't had a chance to go find it yet. The high load that I stopped at last time had no pressure signs at all.

I love H-1000 in my 300 Win and 338 Lapua, but it's too fast IMHO in the 300 RUM with a 240 grain bullet for optimal performance IMHO. JonA got around 3000 FPS in his 300 RUM with US-869

Nice... I'll definitely have to give it a try next :) Thanks again for the tip.
