Has anybody tried the Hornady 162 a-max in 280 rem or have a load for this. I've tried the 178 A-MAX in .30 cal with great accuracy and hits animals hard. Thought it may be worth a try if you can push it to 2800-2850.

I have no personal experience with the 162 AMAX bullet although I shoot .280 Remington a lot.

After sending you to the ramshot website I went up to my loading library and pulled out the Second Edition of Modern Reloading by Richard Lee.

He shows max loads as follows:
H1000 60 gr 2711 fps
H414 47.5 gr 2669
H4831 54.5 gr 2644
H4350 49.5 gr 2614

Hodgen's reloading manual lists comparable data.

If Ramshot can do what they claim they can do then their Magnum powder just might be the right stuff.

Again- I have not ever loaded with Ramshot powder. They are gaining a much larger profile since their acquisition by Western.

I think I might try some- with some Hornady 162 gr AMAX's

They seem to work well in my 7WSM at 2985fps, and in the 7-08 at 2715fps.
A few animals said they worked really well up to 400 yds.
I bet they work great at 280 velocities.

You can easily get 2800 safely in a 24" bbl, probably even a 22". I've never run the A-max, but have run the 162 Interlock a little bit. 60 grs of R-22 got me 2970fps. I've run several 160s in the near 3000fps range with that load with no problems. Quickload predicts that a 160 Nosler Partition can run 2990 with R-22 at 65K psi. (which is SAAMI max for the .270, and should be for the .280Rem) Id stick to the slower powders such as H4831, R-22, H7828, N165, and the like.

I think I'll have to try them out, I've been shooting 140gr BT with good accuracy, just liked thre BC of the A-max.

Hi Travis
I use them in my 280, and get 2840fps with outstanding accuracy with 57g of N560 and Russian primers.
The Amaxes are a superb deer sized game bullet and are the reason I picked the 280 as a cartridge- enough velocity, great accuarcy and dead reliable feeding.
Regards
Ross
