New to coyote hunting.

Is there a good bullet 80 gr or less for Coyote (25-06). The 80 gr or less is a state law. All shots less than 300 yards. Powder suggestions also appreciated.

Many thanks.

Just out of curiosity. How far out can you shoot the 75 v max on coyote?

Just curious, what state requires the 80gr or less? I hadn't heard that rule.

My 25-06 I've only shot 4 coyotes with, usually use the littler guns. I used to own one that I shot 90gr Winchester PEP loads from, great at killing but terrible on hides. This one I shot 100gr TTSX Barnes through first and now have went to 100gr Sirocco II bullets. So far both have done far less damage than the varmint bullets to hides. They will exit, but the exit is the size of the tip of my pinky, not a big hole. I'm not sure if the lighter varmint bullets will stay in a coyote unless you load them down on velocity. You might look at a 80gr TTSX or something that will zip through without over-expanding. From a 243 or 6mm 75gr bullets will wreck a bobcat and get messy on a coyote not hit solidly in an area with plenty of yote to absorb the shrapnel.

Thanks mcseal2 -

I am in NJ. Gets kind of difficult using a rifle here period. Really have to know your shots. I study satelite maps before making gun go bang.

And yes, I can understand the issue of a lite bullet. Had a talk with a tech at Sierra the other day and he recommend heavier bullet as well.

Not sure what we are going to do for now. Will most likely scout areas for making shots and work up a load for the V-Max and the Sierra 75HP. We have access to a shooting range to check loads/accuracy.

Coyotes are putting stress on local deer. The state of NJ has become more open on taking these critters.

Understood. Sounds like an explosive bullet less likely to ricochet is the right choice for you.

What state would make a dumb law like that? They don't make 80 grain bullets for any larger calibers, Maybe that is no bigger than 80 grain for .224 diameter so people are not using silenced rifles. I would like to look that up. I have a custom 257roberts AI. I can get nearly the speeds of my old 25-06 because i have a 26 inch tube.

I use the 87gr V-max I use modern powders..... easy to meter superformance powder.
