Need quick help RE: #43 RCBS Shell Holder

If you are trying to shorten the case it will work those shell holders are made less thickness so you can shorten the over all length so your shoulder isn't hitting

The die manufacturers recommend raising the ram until it touches the bottom of the die then lowering the ram and turning in another 1/4 to 1/3 turn. The instructions for Lee, Hornady, and RCBS have similar recommendations.

I am concerned about crushing the case neck/shoulder. I've done it unfortunately.
Close, but not quite. The instructions say to raise the ram, with a shell holder inserted, to the top of the stroke. Then screw the die in until it contacts the Shell Holder. Then lower the ram slightly, screw the die in about 1/8 turn and tighten the die lock ring. This will give you cam over and will size a case to saami spec.

Not all shell holders comply to standard manufacturing measurements. Found that out after destroying a 204 Ruger decapping spindle. Die set-up worked fine for one shell holder, but ruined the spindle with the other.

Well if you need one I got one from an old WSSM I had let me know if you want it. Just pay the shipping and it's yours

Pretty much what I meant. Followed the instructions to the letter. Still at least .006" off. My gunsmith actually sized and loaded a case for me. Using my comparator, the headspace was 1.724. He used an RCBS die set. I used the same die set and my resized cases measure 1.736. I haven't had this trouble on anything else.

Did you both use the same shell holder? Not same number, but same shell holder?

No. I did mine at home. He did his in his shop.
I took a few thousandths off my shell holder, hold it in a belt sander for a few seconds.
Easy peezy, they don't have to be the exact height or perfect just shorter.

Had .008" taken off a shell holder. Die now reaches and forms the shoulder. Thanks for this recommendation. It saved me money, time, and trouble shipping stuff back to the manufacturer
