It's mostly the college towns where the problem is at. Take Cal. Most all the interior counties are Republic, and vote that way. It's the cosatal counties that hold the most people and vote left. Maybe if they don't get their building permits they'll think differently.

Is your ML an inline, if so look at the Thor bullets. They are expensive but very good. They are a Barnes Triple Shock bullet built for a muzzle loader. They have a sizing kit you need to get to find the correct bore size for your gun. The bullet is built with a skirt that upon firing conforms to your bore. Kind of a modern take of the old lead mini bullet. I have used these for several years and have not had a failure yet. Shooting them over Blackthorn 209 powder. As some one else stated the muzzle loader must be iron sights in Colorado so shooting out to 250 yards is a stretch although with the right sights and young eyes it can be done but a stretch for most. I would recommend trying to keep your shots under 200.
As for weight I shoot the 300 gr bullet. They are also available in a 250 gr but when shooting at an elk you want all the knock down you can get.

The CVA I have is the Accura V2 and know also have the Accura LR X. At 100yrds on a bench I can shoot a 3 shot group with all 3 holes touching. They are shooters
A 250 yard poke with side lock and fixed sights is a difficult thing to do. It you have a vernier peep setup that will help. Getting the consistency in velocity/ignition is just like reloading. Practice a bunch and keep that powder sealed tight.

In Colorado, 54 cal. is the minimum for elk using round balls but 50 cal. conicals are ok. 250 yds with iron sights is optimistic to me. I would work to be within 100 yds even if you take a shot a little longer. Since both lead and copper are currently legal, I would use the conical that shoots best for you. One of the other threads has some nice recommendations for 50 cal. loads. Cheers.

The 300gr fpb shot good in mine but thy are discontinued, the 300gr Thor shoots good, and the 270gr bore lok shoots good too--- all with bh209 ( good luck finding the powder and if you do--bring your big boy wallet
Powerbelt platinum 338gr shot well too but they are discontinued also
Just make sure you have enough velocity at 250 for your bullets to expand the 270s shoot at 1950 and the 300s shoot at 1850 from my cva rifle - at those speeds im down to 1100-1200 ft lbs and 13-1400fps at 250 yards ( my personal limit for ml with this set up is 200y, but u do u)
Elk ml bullets in co gotta be full bore 50 + cal expanding , where ya plan on going? What tag u put in for?

250 with a black or black substitute powder muzzle loader and open sights I say is a good bit overly optimistic. Run just a 5 mph wind calc and the drop using the highest BC full bore bullet money can buy at 250. You get into uphill/downhill/wind/nerves etc and it gets really dicey fast. Were it a scoped 209 primer outfit using sabot bullets and time to range and dial I'd have a different opinion. Smokeless ML would be a chip shot. Maybe with a vernier tang sight, range finder and ballistic computer with several minutes to set the shot up it would be something I would consider? I'd have shot it a lot at extended ranges beforehand for sure.

I'll be in Colorado unit 49, I've got the points to draw the tag, waiting till late next week for draw results.
I have shot the 270 and 350 bor locks, both shoot good out to 200 yards.
The Hornady Great Plains conical will shoot well in pretty much anything and good accuracy. Really disappointed they discontinued the .54 version that shot great in my .54 Hawkins.
