SAUM’s Share yours from Hunting or Comp. Pics Heavy !!

You guys got me thinking. Inwas planning a 7PRC build in the future but seeing the posts here and the info, I'm definately considering a saum instead. Is there any inparticular i need to know for best performance and accuracy? Stay around a certain barrel length, what size action is best, etc... i know i could tally up info from the different builds but in the spirit if the thread trying to grab some solid info for us new builders.

Go long action, or at the very least a mid. Long action will give you more options to change to a different cartridge in the future if you want. Barrel length, I like longer, other guys go the other direction. Determine the use of the rifle and bullet you want to shoot and I am sure you will get some great feedback.

Patrick Henry makes a great point. If you use a long action you can always switch to a 7 PRC if you don't like the fps you are getting on a load, or whatever. On the flip side, if you have a medium action and want to switch to 7 PRC you are going to have an issue with COL.

Pretty sure the BAT vesper medium can run a 7 prc without issues. But they aren't cheap….stick the Unknown Munitions bottom metal and it can handle a coal of 3.4" which would be plenty for a 7 prc/wsm/saum etc. Obviously can't run a true long action but they make a LA for that. I have this exact setup (medium vesper with UM bottom metal)in the works for a 300 wsm/7 saum.

They work in S A but need more room and LA provides plenty with ability to change if ever needed.

Ever notice how many Short Action SAUMs for sale?

Ask me how I know…I have a Rem Seven in 7 SAUM and Rem 700 SA in 300 SAUM and both shoot well with mid-weights but …My long actions can handle the longer, higher BC bullets.

They still make them but I think they are behind so you can't order them right now. I also have a clymr stock for my 6.5prc and love it as well. Looks like @rellison312 has a full GW setup. Sweet looking rifle man.

Honestly the niche the saum fills is you can get 7mm magnum performance in a short action. Once you go to a long action then you might as well get a prc that has better factory ammo and brass options. Just my .02.

That may help your thought process.

Build it the way YOU want it !!

My 7SAUM Hunting Build Plan Outline example.

The SAUM is capable of outstanding performance and accuracy. It is an overachiever. Performs well in a lot of configurations.

*I'll use my most recently completed
7 SAUM build, I won't get into
my reasoning of particular detailed cartridge, bullet, or component choices as that is another lengthy topic for each.

My Build parameters may be broad in scope that I narrow down based on Personal Preferences & Experience.
I Take a System Approach where components are selected to complement each other.

I start by deciding what the use is, the what & where. *utilizing my desired cartridge.
(ie: Big game, small game, backcountry, open country, long or medium range, or a combination of all of the above)

Use;
Example: 7 SAUM mid weight do it all suppressed backcountry hunting rifle.

Then the bullet/bullets I want to run, based on the above, & numbers generated with a ballistic calculator for velocity parameters required for the game & distance I require.
(Light, heavy, or both)

Bullet;
Example: 147gr Afterburners @ 3000 FPS.

The above factors drive the rest of my build planning approach & component selection. This is where I narrow down the details.

Next I think about what I envision the finished rifle system to be,
Exactly what I want. I don't let
Price or availability dictate the vision here.

Everything hereafter is largely based on what works best based on experience, knowledge, & personal preferences.

Action:
I choose the desired action as the base. I'll determine length, weight, desired features, material etc.
that best facilitates the specific use for the cartridge / bullet choice of this build only.
example: Defiance Anti X medium
Integrated lug & 20 moa rail. Fully DLC coated.

Barrel:
I'll determine type, twist, length, contour, etc. that will enable my bullets Ballistic & Performance results I'm after.
Example: HCA Carbon, Heavy Hunter
Profile, 1-8 twist, 18" length, threaded 5/8-24 for suppressor use, throated long for 147 monos & 180's

Bottom Metal:
I prefer BDL for my use.
example: Defiance/Snowy Mountain
XM length 3.200 BDL Kit Black Ano.

Trigger:
I choose a high quality reliable adjustable trigger.
Example: Trigger Tech Diamond, pro curved.

Stock:
I choose a high quality lightweight stock With the weight, length, comb height/design, & features I prefer.
Example: Manners Pro Hunter,
26oz. Carbon Fiber, with front pic rail,
& arca tripod rail.

Optic ( build specific )
This is an area that I'm still working on getting dialed in due to aging eyesight. I've been trying different options.
Currently going back to a NF scope I've used before with
30 mm tube, 50mm objective, sub 30 oz. Weight, 4-32 power, SFP.

Rings: lightweight, strong, Picattiny type.
Example: Badger Ordnance
30mm, .823 height, best width for fitting to the Anti X

Scope level: I like an independently adjustable type with good visibility
That's visible in shooting positions.
Example: Flatline OPS. Halo X

Bipod:
Example: Atlas Cal Tall, quick detach, 3"leg extensions, Hawk Hill Talon claw feet.

Tripod:
Example: Leofoto SA-324C+MA-30L

Suppressor:
Example: Dead Air Nomad-LTi-e

With some thought process & information gathered prior to building a custom rifle this outline may help you get the results your after.

Ha, thank you Levi, it's a fun one. It shoots much better than I can, but I still manage to get less than .50. Not sure anything beats the Clymr stock, would highly recommend for any new custom builds.

I hear you and can't argue a lot on that, except for me I enjoy the fun in pushing cartridges to the limit and see what performance you can get. Also, Hornady has refused to support the 6.8 Western in any way including .277 high BC bullets, so I am holding a bit of a grudge there. The 6.8W blows the 6.5 PRC out the water and they know it. Also, I think they left meat on the bone with the 7 PRC. The 404 Jeffrey case is perfect for a parent cartridge. Hornady probably got the cartridge length right but could of went with a slightly larger case and pop that shoulder to 35 degrees. I know I am ranting but the 7 PRC is overrated in my mind.
