Beautiful blacky

You know... I've been hunting over 60 years and still get the flutters in my gut when I get a hard won shot at a animal, especially if it's a special one like your black wolf.

I don't regret misses caused by that. I celebrate that I'm still able to experience that excitement and adrenaline rush because there's not a lot in life to provide that for me any more.

You GO BRENT! Thanks for sharing your success on a hard won wolf. We couldn't be there with you to get that first hand excitement and satisfaction but I think I speak for a lot of LRH guys and gals that we still get a good bit of enjoyment sharing it with you even if it's just through your pics and discussion.

It's a combo. Generally with wolves if you shoot one you can call them back or get them to stick around. Their pack instinct to stick together is very strong and if you have your head together you capitalize on it. The issue is how patient can you be. I've been successful multiple times calling them back with distress and howls. This one I called in to 38 yards after tagging another one at 300. Very similar senario.

As far as calling, I have very mixed results. Howling for location is prefered, canine distress to get their curiosity up and potentially to come it. I have yet to be successful using animal distress calls with wolves but also I've mainly hunted them during the day. If hunting at night it might work better, just unsure. I think I suck at calling so it's something I need to work on.

Very cool. Commendable, as they quite the elusive critter. I'm assuming you're using hand calls as opposed to an e-caller?

I've heard, but can't confirm, coyote calls can call in wolves. The wolves come sweeping in looking to see what little turd is in their territory. Makes sense…not sure if it works.

I've got coyote calls, hand, and they don't do much for wolves. They seem to cohabitate just fine. Coyotes and wolves have howled at the same time and often coyotes will respond to wolf calls. I do still believe a lot of it could be just me not being good at it. What I tend to bring to the table is a good eye and understanding of where to look, decent enough shot, and pile of tenacity. Otherwise I'd likely not kill any. This year I've seen the 5 times, missed 3 and killed 1. The 2 at 1600 and 920 were understandable but the this last one is purely a complete full moron error on my side. I'm pretty annoyed with myself.

Ahh, but you're gaining experience. Having the sightings from your calls and even if you miss…gives you way more experience than I have. I understand your frustration.

I didn't realize there is such a bounty in ID. I'm not aware of such a bounty in MT. If there was I might be switching up where and why I'd be snowmobiling.

It varies a lot. Certain zones are having issues with elk numbers so they have increased a bounty to help people with expenses. If you are succesful, it sure doesn't hurt to have that little bit of help. I don't keep track of how much I spend on this............

Haha. Fair enough. Yeah, most of us don't play outdoors to make money.
