Any South Texas folks here? Heading down to Falls City area on distant cousin's ranch (low fence, free range) next weekend to hopefully kill my first Whitetail. Seasoned Muley and Elk hunter, but never done the WT thing. Hoping for pre-rut or rut, but scheduled around the 'average' timing (when we could go), which can sometimes be very different than actual timing. Any rut or pre-rut activity starting?? PM is fine too. Thanks!!

You should be good to go on the rut I think. I know between Cuero and Gonzales they are moving. Had a buddy shoot a nice one yesterday afternoon. He wasn't locked up but was definitely looking for love

Living in the Seattle area, but down visiting my parents in Pleasanton. Bucks in my parent's backyard are actively chasing the does.

Did an experiment today in preparation for next year's deer hunt in grizzly country in North Washington state. Shot my antlerlless deer with my .300 Wby Mag using a 168gr Barnes TTSX at about 120yds. Can't see entry hole, but exit is obvious.

Stepping down to my .240 Wby Mag and 80gr Barnes TTSX for tomorrow's hunt.

Yep, those TTSX are brutal one game! Thanks for the info. Sounds like a cold day tomorrow (highs in the low 50s and lows in high 30s) with rain may help get them going.....that berometer is dropping!

Saw one on the way in to the blind this morning and another high tailing it into the brush when a heavy rain started.

They're out there. My friend, whose farm I'm hunting, wants me to help thin the doe herd.

Deer moving good on Thursday since the weather cooperated, and knowing the weather was going to warm up rapidly starting Friday, I wasn't going to pass up a buck that I'd be happy with on the last day of the hunt, so when a nice 9 pts came to the feeder, I took him (after a few minute debate).......fell right where I shot him. 16" inside spread. Hunted my cousin's other low fence ranch in the next county over and could have taken a 10 pt on Friday night, but had no room in freezer so I passed. Instead, I shot a few pigs.

BTW - bought my license at HEB.....wouldn't have thought a grocery store sold hunting licenses.....only in TX!

looks like a good cold front coming Tuesday - Friday, which is probably the next window for deer movement, and potentially the start of the Rut. I'm heading home tomorrow, but already planning my trip for next year.
