300 wsm loads

Hi I'm pretty new to reloading still learning from my father in-law and just got a 300 short mag and am just looking for some loads people have great results with. It's a Savage with a varmit barrel and one of the choate varmit stocks. And topped with a vortex viper 6.5-20. Any good helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Just starting to get into the reloading and longer range shooting

What Wolf said. I find non-mag primers best too. 180 gr bullets were made for the 300 WSM. You can go to the 200s, but start eating into powder space as the 300 WSM has a short throat.
My favorite bullets are - 180 Accubond or Ballistic tip. 185 Berger VLDs are awesome too.
Norma or Winchester brass.
Federal 210M or regular Federal 210 primers.
The WSM tends to work better with faster powders than a 300 WM. H4350 - H4831 - RL17 are all good.

Ok thanks the guy I got it from said he was shooting 180 accubonds just curious what other people are sending thru it. And just not sure if I could go any heavier without having to change mag box or anything

Savages have pretty long mag boxes. I shoot a Savage short action 300 WSM with a DBM and a SAAMI chamber. I hit the lands with a 180 before I run out of magazine.

Win. Brass
Old Win. Lg primer which was listed for Std. or Mag. loads
IMR 4350 65.0 Gr. (Sixty Five) Near Max. by 2004 data.
180 Gr. Sierra, Hornady, and Nosler Part. bullets.
O.A.C.L. 2.860 to work through Montana Magazine.
Groups of less than .625 if I do my part with Sierra bullets.
I could not get velocity with IMR 4831 to match IMR 4350 velocity.
Above 2950 fps. 24" barrel.
This rifle does not shoot lighter than 180 gr. bullets well.

I haven't had any problems loading heavy bullets in the 300 WSM. I've loaded everything from 165 on up to 230 in the 300 WSM and have never had a problem with bullets seating too deep in the case. My favorite powder for 200 grains and up is RL26. You get top velocity, excellent precision, and it tested stellar for temp stability. My current load is pushing a 200 ELD-X at 3010 fps.

I've also had great luck with IMR7828SSC for 210s at 2900 fps and 230s at 2725 fps. RL17 with 165s at 3200 fps and 200 grainers at 2950 fps. H4350 works well to for 180s at 2950 fps and 190 grain bullets at 2900. H4831SC is decent for heavy temp stable loads too, but you'll give up some velocity compared to the RL powders and 7828SSC.

I am running the 200 grain ELD-X out of mine. I tried IMR 7828ssc and RL-17. The RL-17 was my favorite as I found a node at around 62 grains reaching an average of 2930 fps. I get a little less than 1 MOA, maybe .75 groups with it (rough estimate). If I was a better shot they would be better. I am using WLRM primers, may try WLR soon. I found a "ball park" seating depth but I havent played with it to fine tune it.

Before I went to the ELD-X, I ran some berger classic hunters in 168 grain. I liked those and almost went back to them at one point.

I too am somewhat new to reloading and the 300 wsm is the caliber I started reloading with.

For thin skin game: 150 gr. Nosler Ballistic Silver Tip, 73 grns. Hodgdon Superformance, CCI Large Rifle Magnum primer, Winchester brass, 2.830 COL. This pretty much duplicates the Winchester factory load and shoots great. Drops whitetails in their tracks out to 400 yards. Running about 3270 fps out of a Winchester mod 70 w/ 24" barrel.

I have shot JLK 185's, Hornady AMAX 185's, Berger 190's, and now the 215 Hybrid. All loads using 4831SC and CCI LRM or Federal 215 LRM for primers.

I now run the Berger 215 Hybrids, 67 grains of 4831SC, CCI LRM or Federal 215 LRM for primers in my Savage Model 12 BVSS with muzzle break. It is a heavy barrel 26", the original Savage tube. MV is 2,870 fps. No issues but work up to the load. Hybrid has shown little if any change in accuracy when adjusting seating depth. I have backed mine all the way down to accommodate some various mags for my short action in preparation to installing a DBM. I am holding half to there quarter MOA out to 700 yards. I have almost 500 rounds of the Hybrids down range so far with nothing but amazement at the accuracy and repeatability.

I have had 3 300wsm over the last few years. I am not afraid to shoot heavy bullets from mine, I was running the 230otm at just over 2700fps from a 24" barrel, swapped over to the 200-20x in that rifle.

For hunting I shot a pile of game with the 165 accubond, a moose with the 165tsx, couple bears with the 165ttsx. I shot one deer with the 168ttsx. I still prefer the accubond for an all around use.

I've shot everything from the 175 matchking to the 215 bergers hybrids and 220 matchking. Mine is a bench gun but I settled on 57.5 grains of h4350 215 hybrid bergers seated 15 thousands off the lands. The 210 vld bergers also shot well at 12 thousands over h4350. Side note, the lighter bullets seemed to like h4831sc and the heavier bullets seemed to prefer h4350. I've been through several 300 wsm barrels and it's a good chambering. I'm having a really hard time trying to find any Winchester brass. Does nickle brass reload just the same as brass?

I have not killed anything with this load yet,it should be a stellar small-medium game load, cant wait to use it.

Have shot several clovers(3 shots touching) with this load and steel out to 600yds with virtually no load work-up.
Another load for elk will be 200 ABs over RL-26 and LR primers showing good promise.
