Waiting on the 195gr 7's to load into my new 28...primary purpose of the gun is longer (for me) shots out to 500, with an elk hunt pushing me to that catridge vs my 30-06 at that distance. Plus it was an excuse to buy a new gun.
I am batting around using it on a Kansas deer hunt this year as well. Will be hunting some big deer (will pass on anything that isn't big as there should be some monsters on this property) and may have some shots that could be long enough to where all the time spent behind the rifle before my elk hunt could make it a better choice than the 30-06.
My question is around the possibility that a deer walks out at 100 or under. I have never used Bergers...shots on game have been 300 or in so I have gone with 180 Nosler BT's in my 30-06. I have heard that some folks have had Bergers essentially fragment on impact when driven at high speeds...I expect to get 3000 to 3050 out of the 28 based on other loads in a similar rifle. Not sure if that is high enough speed to get them to replicate the issues some have had.
Would folks have any concern with using the 28 with those bullets knowing a shot could be 400 or could be 40, depending on what stands i hunt and where the deer may walk out? I always have the option of using the 30-06 as well with Nosler bullets, which are proven in my gun. Just dial a little more elevation and think about the AB or BT, which should be basically the same load with maybe a small tweak in recipe.
