Light rifle vs lose body weight

Haven't read all the posts so I'm not sure if this has been broached. I think that how remote you hunt MAY also helps determine the weight of the rifle, not just how much you want to carry or to be accurate. Lived and hunted in Alaska for over 35 years. In the early 80's when I hunted off of the...

    Moose Hunt

Yes, I read this: "At first light I spotted a 65”+ moose about a mile away. At last light he fed out into a meadow and was 464 yards away." Being that it's September, and there's about 14 hours of daylight, and you could stalk a mile in a couple hours, my assumption is that they sat there and...

    Moose Hunt

Lived and hunted in Alaska for 36 of my 56 years. The decision seems unfair although I sort of understand it. But moose aren't like deer or even caribou, if wounded they're not gonna run 2 or 3 miles til they expire. Usually if your first shot doesn't put them down, they'll just stand there or...

    Longest Kill Shot ?

I know the question was about "longest kill shot". But for me some of my most interesting shots have NOT been about how far away but about how close... Caribou: 270 yards w/300WSM (shot him through the antler) Kodiak Island Blacktail Deer: 420 yards w/7MM Magnum (brown bear got this deer)...

New scope for long range elk, $2000 budget

Have a Burris 24x scope. Could NOT get it dialed in. Called Burris and they told me I needed these tapered ring inserts to get proper elevation with that much X-power because their turrets wouldn't adjust enough. I bought the tapered ring inserts and finally got the scope to work, but it was a...

    Gun Buy Back

Same here in Alaska. Open/concealed carry guaranteed by our state constitution with no CCW required. I can rent a table at a gun show for $150 and sell all my firearms if I want. (I no longer have an FFL). I can put an add on alaskaslist.com and sell a firearm. I can go to a pawn shop and swap a...

    Gun Buy Back

First off, I don't have any "assault weapons" cause I lost them all in a boating accident. BUT if I did, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't turn them in...Well, to be up front, I still have my tire iron "assault weapon"....

New scope for long range elk, $2000 budget

Leupold for me every day for almost 40 years. Lived and hunted in Alaska for decades, Africa, Canada and lower 48. Only had ONE issue when a crosshair detached about 20 years ago. My current favorite is the Leupold VX III 8.5-25x50 LRP Gold Ring scope. Made in America, awesome lifetime warranty...

Do Your Wife And/or Kids Hunt?

As with some of the other members, my wife is country but didn't shoot or hunt much til she met me....Now, she's as avid as I am. The step kids don't hunt or shoot though...

MOA at 400 but can't get on target at 650?

As usual, lots of great info on this post, but I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. Something's loose, barrel was hot and/or the ammo is not of a good quality balanced powder charge. I shoot a 95 grain Federal .224 Valkyrie at 1,000 yards and ding the plate all day. Went to the cheaper Federal 75...

    Terrible being a southpaw

Fellow lefty here. Actually I'm an ambi shooter but left eye dominant. I'm proficient with handgun and long gun with either arm but favor shooting left handed. Especially when pistol shooting with both eyes open. I started on right hand bolt rifles about 45 years ago. Then got a left hand Savage...

Nightforce vs Huskemaw or something else in that price range??

Wife and I have been using the Leupold 8.5-25x50 VX 3i Side Focus LRP scopes shooting past 1,000 yards and cost is about $900. The elevation/windage adjustment is spot on. Gave my wife 2 adjustment call-outs and she was hitting at 1,000 yards on her first try. Been using Leupold for 40+ years...

    Too much camo?

Nice job. I’ve painted stocks off and on for 30+ years. I only use 3/4 flat earthy colors in a fairly large pattern. I use the textured spray paint from Lowes. Has like little rubble pellets in it. It’s awesome stuff for keeping a good grip on your rifle with wet or bloody hands.

Why no love for the Sig optics?

Not judging, but too expensive for what you get being that they’re not made in America. And I buy American made: Leupold. But glad you like your scope. Thx.
