    Barnes TTSX velocity question

I have been testing the same bullet in two 300 mags (3,400 fps?) at 600 yards into wet clay. I estimate the impact vel. to be right around 2,000 fps and I am just barely getting decent expansion.

    300 win mag help please

I built my rifle on a pre-64 M70 (was a 264), and I did it in 30-338 Win. for that very reason (OAL). I went with a 12 twist and shoot 180 grain bullets accurately out to 600 yards. I am very happy with this rifle and would not change a thing.

    TSX Performance At Close Range

I have not tried the E-Tips. I will do some research and see if I can find any "on game" results (especially at long range). Thank you for the (E) tip.

    Long Range Encore Idea

I want to build a rifle that is no more than 40" long, so that it will fit in a pack for hunting near home. An Encore with a 26" barrel just fits the bill (and I have a custom 270 JDJ No. 2 barrel ((like a 270 Gibbs)). But, I like to shoot from prone with a lot of tension on the stock, and I...

    Pre-64 model 70 ideas wanted ...

You might want to see how it feeds improved cases. I ran some improved cases in a pre-64 just to see how they fed, and I remember them not feeding so well (although I did not have bullets seated). I would go with a 270 Hawk, because it would be easy to make with 280 brass.

    TSX Performance At Close Range

Thanks for the photos Jim. I bet that is what happend in my case; the nose disitegrated and then the shank slipped through without doing as much damage. Partitions kind of do the same thing, but for some reason they have a much more dramatic effect on the animal. I read on a California forum...

Best ALL AROUND bullet all time

"Doug, did you mean Nosler Accubond or Hornady (something else)? (Not trying to correct you, just curious what you consider the best all-around). Thanks. " I meant Hornady Interbond...sorry. They fly well (they shoot 1 MOA flatter @ 600 than the Bal. Tip in 2 rifles), and do not come...

Best ALL AROUND bullet all time

My 2 cents: Best killing bullet: Nosler Partition. Best flying bullet: Nosler Balistic Tip. Best all around bullet: Hornady Accubond.

    TSX Performance At Close Range

KIWI-Good point. As I look back most of my deer have been shot from a far without the deer knowing. This one was looking right at me. Rocky Mtn-I was not able to do a good autopsy. I was 10 miles back, in a 1,500' valley, and it was dusk; I did a thourough quartering and de-boneing, but did...

    TSX Performance At Close Range

Well, one advantage for me is that by using them I can avoid possibly being fined and having my license yanked (lead bullets are now illegal for hunting here).

    TSX Performance At Close Range

Thank you everybody who gave me feedback in my lead-free bullet thread. I went on a backpack hunt last weekend and ended up getting a shot at a mere 36 yards (who says you can't swing an 11lb. long range rig like a quail gun!). But here is the deal: I have killed the last 10 deer with a lung...

    Best lead-free bullet for L.R.

Thanks for all of the comments. I will do a search on the GS bullets. Hunting other zones is not appealing to me, as the areas I currently hunt are practically in my back yard, and I know them well from 20 years of backpack hunting. I would not bring this up on other forums because I would...

    Best lead-free bullet for L.R.

I am in CA and we are now restricted to lead-free bullets. I am wondering what the best bullet to use for long range hunting in a 300 mag (I have a 12 twist 300 Win. & 30-338). I have shot the 150 grain Barnes TSX out to 600 yards, and it expanded in wet dirt at 600 yards, and seemed to shoot...

    30-338 vs 300 Win Mag

I have two (almost) identical rifles; one is a 30-338, and the other is a 300 Win. THey both shoot the same for accuracy and trajectory. I (slightly) prefer the 30-338 because it fits a 3.400" action, whereas the 300 Win. needs a 3.600" action. Plus, I enjoy necking down W-W 338 casings in my...
