Classifieds Safety Guide

Stay smart. Stay safe. Protect yourself before you buy or sell.

Important Notice

LongRangeHunting (LRH) is not responsible for fraudulent transactions. These guidelines exist to help you avoid scams and protect yourself. Use good judgment, verify who you’re dealing with, and never rush a deal.

TL;DR — Stay Safe in Classifieds
  • Never use untrackable payments (Friends & Family, Venmo, Zelle, money orders, crypto, wires).
  • If a price looks impossible, check feedback first.
  • Keep conversations in LRH Private Messages — “email me” is a major red flag.
  • Report suspicious posts or PMs. Add Chris if you’re unsure.
Major Warning: Keep conversations on LRH
  • Requests to move to email or off-site chat are a major red flag.
  • Scammers move off-site to avoid moderation and records.
  • Stay in LRH PMs so reporting and documentation are possible.

1. Never Use Untrackable Payment Methods

Do not send money using any of the following:

  • PayPal Friends & Family
  • Venmo
  • Zelle
  • Cash App
  • Money orders
  • Cashier’s checks
  • Wire transfers
  • Cryptocurrency

Untrackable = unrecoverable. Assume it’s gone.

Use only options with tracking or dispute protection:

  • PayPal Goods & Services
  • Credit card payments through trusted platforms
  • Verified escrow services

If a seller insists on Friends & Family, money order only, or wire transfer, stop. It’s not worth the risk.

2. Watch for Red Flags

Deals that look unrealistic are usually unsafe. Scammers rely on urgency and pressure to close quickly.

Before sending money:

  • Check the member’s history in the Buyers & Sellers Feedback forum.
  • See if they are a Supporting Member.
  • Review post history, join date, and prior transactions.
  • Request recent, timestamped photos of the item.
  • Ask clear questions. Legitimate sellers answer confidently.
Major Warning: Keep conversations on LRH
  • Do not agree to move to email or external chat apps.
  • Stay inside LRH Private Messages so moderators can help if needed.
  • Scammers often use off-site contact to hide evidence.

If unsure, stop. Verify or report.

Quick Buyer Checklist (before you pay)

  • Scan feedback: Buyer/Seller Feedback.
  • Confirm join date and post history.
  • Request timestamped photos and direct answers.
  • Refuse untrackable payments.
  • Keep all messages inside LRH PMs.

Examples: Real vs. Scam

Open examples

Legit: “Here are today’s photos with a note and date. Pay via PayPal Goods & Services if you’re comfortable.”

Red flag: “Email me at ____ — I only take Zelle/Cash App/F&F. Need payment in the next hour.”

3. Keep Your Account Secure

Your LRH account is your responsibility. Keeping it secure protects you and other members.

  • Keep your email address current: Update Account Details.
  • Use a strong, unique password: Password & Security.
  • Consider a password manager such as 1Password.
  • Do not reuse passwords from other sites; change passwords older than one year.
  • If your email address is outdated and we cannot verify you, you may lose access to the account. This protects the community from impersonation and fraud.
  • To become a Supporting Member: Account Upgrades.

4. LRH’s Role

LRH is a community platform, not a broker. We do not handle payments, verify identities, or guarantee transactions. These guidelines help you reduce risk, but you are responsible for your own decisions.
