Took a good friend along last night...and the success continues...

I couldn't let him have all the fun. Between us we caught around a dozen during our quick evening trip to the creek after work.

As far as I could tell the fish had no clue there was a government shut down. For that matter it weren't much on my mind either.

not being critical or anything, but noticed you were wearing felt soled boots on your waders. Last time I heard they were illegal up your way (or are soon to be illegal). If they're still OK to use, soak the felt in a cup of bleach and hot water to kill off the parasites (mostly rock snot). I've been thru four pairs of boots so far, and should have just bought Korkers in the first place, or the new ones from L.L.Bean.

Anyway a good day's fishing will usually take a load off your mind. I was out two days ago, and fished for about an hour on a large pond. Caught one bass, two crappie, and seven or eight blue gill. All were caught on a Tellico.

trickymisfit, check your sources they are still legal. There was a proposal to ban them, but it was shot down. Might not be a bad idea to check your facts before even implying someone might be breaking the law. Not real cool to those of us that do our best to follow the regulations.

I'm thinking Federal registered trout streams, as well as Federal Gold Medal Trout streams. If I'm wrong, I'm tickled to death! But I was told last spring that this would become a mandate. To add to this, I've been informed by several organizations from different parts of the country that this was a matter of fact. I go by what Trout Unlimited has informed me.

First off, let me quantify that the only fishing I do is at the counter in the local supermarket for fresh prepared fish, my only fishing was back when I was a kid, fly fishing for trout while backpacking in the Allegheny National Forest 45 years ago....

The way I read that, Gary was merely suggesting due dilligence. Nothing more.

IMO (strictly), Gary has always come across in my view as a techinical person when posting on this forum, not someone to shoot blanks so to speak.

I need to first correct myself, as felt is still legal in Montana except for Federal lands and National Parks. But it's also an ecological issue, and will be the law of the land in due time.

All trout with the exception of Brown (German) trout are highly effected by things like rock snot, whirling disease, and a few others. It has been learned that fisherman are the main culprits in this issue. We track thru infested mud, and then carry it to another body of water. For a long time it was felt that we did this thru boats, but later it was learned that felt soles, and even your shoe laces were the guilty party. Plus you can add the fly or lure and even the fishing line your using.

Virtually every manufacturer of wading boots and boot soled waders have dropped felt from their lines due to this issue alone. There are a couple of wading boots being marketed right now that use a hard form of felt that sort of resemble a scotch brite pad (Chota for one). I don't go so far as to completely disassemble the laces out of my boots, but I do a soak in very hot water with soap and bleach. (I know there's better stuff out there). After about an hour, I rinse them in strait water with a half cup of bleach. I might add here that as of the last three years, I also do this with my warm water gear due to a newer parasite that is deadly to human flesh. I never wade without waders anymore in warm water! If you choose to wade in warm water, make sure you have zero open wounds on your body as this parasite is deadly.

Back to boots a minute. I've tried several pairs lately. Found the Korkers and the L.L.Beans to be the best. Nice thing about Korkers is that the soles are removable, but they also have a downside in that you need to remove them for a proper cleaning. They do sell felt as well as rubber and studded soles.
