I've had good luck with plumbers putty and Hornady One shot case lube as a release agent. The Pro-bed2000 kits I've been using come with an excellent release agent paste that works as well. I use the paste in the lug areas and actions screw holes. I personally find the clean up associated with modeling clay is more difficult than plumbers putty. I've head playdough works well but haven't tried it yet.

I tried the OTC modeling clay. It works in a pinch but I wouldn't recommend it as a staple. I've switched to plasticine and it works much better. +1 to tobnpr on the release agent technique. Acid brushes are great for getting release agent into fine detailed areas.

Plumbers putty, Kiwi(neutral color), JB weld, painters tape. All you need.

Silly putty will flow if it gets warm, non-drying modeling clay works fine. I use Hornady one shot case lube aerosol as a release agent.

I use playdo with Johnson'd car wax as a release agent. Just happened to have both on hand. Never had a problem.
I have used PLAY-DOH for year. Alway works great.

Play-Doh and Johnson's Paste Wax. I tried an arasol release agent once (Pam) worked well but left minute air pockets between the botom of action and the bedding. Wax has never done this, always silky smooth.
For release agent I always hornady one shot. Never streaks and always get into all the places u want it.

I steal my kids playdo. It's always laying around somewhere and works just as well as any Clay I've tried. And for release agent I use Kiwi Neutral shoe polish when I have it and turtle wax car polish when I can't find my shoe polish. And I use JB weld as the bedding compound.
I used this for awhile but went back to Johnsons paste wax myself.
