Is There a Better Cartridge Than 308 WIN?

Because it's a smaller bore diameter. "Need" is a funny word…but all things being equal, from equal length barrels with equal capacity cases the one with the larger diameter bullet is more efficient. Generates more power. And wouldn't require as long a barrel to realize it's full potential becuase the total cubic volume for powder to burn and gas to expand is is much greater.

Extreme example but thing 257 wby vs 458 win mag. Both based on a 30-06 length h&h case. Which one is more efficient as in powerful per grain of powder burned? Which one do you think would really benefit from a 26+ inch barrel more than the other?
Thanks, I was getting to this. You explained it nicely!

I shoot a .308 every day along with a couple of 300 RUMs, a .338 Edge, and/or a 28 Nosler. IMO, with the .308 it is more difficult to hit a 10" target at 620 than it is to hit the same target at 910 with the other rifles. The difference is wind drift. It is fairly easy to hit the 10" target out to 500, but once you go beyond that, wind is just a killer.

I get that. However powder capacity is similar and I have found that the 08 does quite well in a short barrel. As for efficiency when you consider the greater advantage of higher bc bullets of the same weight then which one is really more efficient.

Ahhh, Long Range Moped.....

Yep that makes sense too…again I guess it depends on what efficiently means.
