Are Rats small game?

When I wanted to get squirrels I would take my rifle, no case, and get on the bus. Get a transfer to ride another bus to the City line. My spot was not far away. Got my limit of big, fat grays in less time than it took for the bus ride - well almost.
Got back on the bus with the squirrels tied on a rope and rode home with my rifle on my shoulder. I only shot one squirrel with a shotgun in my life, after that only used .22 rifle or handgun (shotgun destroyed too much and I hate to bite down on a bb.. When I got home my Mother would process them. Only comment was when I ruined some meat She would say can't you shoot them a little closer to the head.
BTW, I always had a good backstop when shooting the .22 I used to catch them running between the trees and a corn field - usually 25yds. They would be carrying an ear in their mouth.

Every now and again a rat tries to move into my wood shop. Got a Gamo .177 pellet pistol loaded with ruger pointed pellets for that business. Someone mentioned a wife with a look, reminded me of my wifes look when I'm sitting on my back porch smokin' squirrels. Got a .22 cal Gamo wisper fusion for that business. I don't care what you call it, it's fun. My five year old daughter is starting to dig it too. Smoked me a little male squirrel last week.

Never tried that. I always fried squirrels.

You must be close to my age. We used to take our 22s and 410s to school with us and the teacher had a spot in the backroom closet to put our rifles while in class. When class was over we got our rifles and hunted on the walk home. North Eastern PA in the mountains.
When we finally got bussed to the city for high school we could not take our rifles and all the city teachers were prejudice against us. Called us Hillbilly Stump Jumpers. So you see Liberalism in the school systems started a long time ago.

When I was in high school, before I had a driving license, I brought my 12 GA to school on the bus. Put it in my locker, take my friends bus home with him. Hunt ducks, then in the morning, take his bus to school with said shotgun, locker, and home on my bus.

Never got a second look from anyone. Gun was cased.

Yes the 60's we would walk down the tracks to the grain elevators with our Benjamin and Sheridan and Crossman pellet rifles in town and shoot rats pigeons. Nobody said a thing. And we didn't shoot each other. Maybe we were more responsible than the kids of today. Like some said on another page we also had our rifles hanging on racks in the back window and they didn't get stolen. People just didn't take others property. Respect for others was the norm.
