I am starting down the road to building a rifle. FWIW, the donor is a savage 10 in 7mm WSM.

I am going to shoot the factory barrel and work up a load. Is a chrono necessary and is the magneto speed sporter a good candidate?

Thanks
Joe

Chronograph is not necessary, however, it is very nice to have to verify velocity (pressure) as well as reloading process. The Magnetospeed Sporter is great!

I have a Magnetospeed Sporter that is brand new and unused I'd sell if interested. I am going to go to a Labradar due to shooting suppressed.

Not absolutely necessary but nice to have. I have that model it's fine. Wouldn't mind getting a Labradar but like most hobbies we are always chasing that next best piece of equipment. Which isn't a bad thing but does keep the misses wondering what we spend all that money on.

if your goal is to only shoot a couple hundred yards then just use whatever is the most accurate in your gun with no chrony needed but if your even the slightest bit interested in long range then it is an absolute must or you are totally blind without that info.

This is a long range forum. That doesn't mean you have to be into long range to be a member. Or take advantage of all the info that's available. Is a chrono necessary, probably not. But if a person is trying to get into long range (say 500 yards and beyond) personally I can't imagine not having a chrono. I use the magneto speed, I'm sure there are better but find it to work quite well. Good luck with your new build, enjoy have fun and be safe.

I never realized how valuable the MagnetoSpeed was until I bought one. Is it absolutely necessary? Like others stated….No. But, it does make the whole process easier and you aren't guessing what your velocity is. It's just another important tool that makes your life easier when working up loads.

My sporter just stopped working customer service has not been good. They basically tell you you shot it is the answer for everything. So I started looking around to see what was out there. It is only 2yrs old with not much use. So I just bought the Caldwell basic model. It has all the programing of the V3 and can be had for under $100 if you shop around. It also works for everything suppressed, arrows doesn't matter. I feel kind o bad because I just was telling 2 guys before xmas how good it was. They both bought one. But if CS is horrible you may as well just get the cheapest thing you can find.
