I have a pair of those to try, im currently using a Duluth trading wool socks, for breaking in boots, gonna try the darn tough next week
Cold weather socks.... any new must haves?

New Zealand Sock company makes merino socks the just plain work in the cold. Same price at Kuiu. These are left and right foot specific.
Darn Tough is a solid rec...the secret is out though. High quality Merin, end of story.
I'm a big fan of wearing a liner sock. Much more added warmth than you'd think and great sweat and friction control for lots of walking. (15 mile days sometimes)
If you are contemplating serious cold (single digits or colder) or a really sedentary hunt, skip the insoles and thick socks and go directly to a pac boot. There's nothing in the world like them when it's just ***-chapping cold. My favorites are these:

what you call cold and what I call cold is most likely very different, Fox river has good merino wool with primaloft socks

I agree with using light liner socks silk or poly both wick moisture, last winter I tried rechargeable battery socks made by Savior, with very thin liner socks, using low setting, skeptical at first but quickly realized that they were the warmest I have ever used in my Muck boots and pac boots, last most of the day on low setting and can be easily turned on and off, pricey but worth the $ IMHO
I have bought some Alpaca heavy over-the-calf socks and they are thick and soft. Sorry, I cannot give you a first-hand review as I just got them and have not had a chance to wear them in cold weather but they look like they'll work great.
I used to wear the World's Softest Socks and they were great but that company has stopped making those socks, they changed the yarn, and I can no longer give them the good reviews they deserved a few years ago.

IME having hunted every single terrain in N America and other countries, Merino wool! I don't care who makes them...if you buy great quality Merino socks they will outperform any other fabric type on the planet. High quality Merino socks should be in the price range of around > 20 bucks per pair or so. Thickness is a personal thing. Personally, when hiking and spot and stalk hunting, I wear very thin socks cause I run hot and my feet sweat. I also prefer to have a bit of room in my boot for late in the day as my foot swells from hiking.
Sitting in a spot for a while, maybe not walking much or riding horses, I might go with a mid weight sock to match my heat generation and insulate my feet a bit more.
Second to buying Merino is proper care - wash them in Merino specific detergent. Nickwax, Kookaburra and the like. It preserves the wicking and resiliency over time. Regular laundry detergent is terrible for wool.

Deodorant or deodorant with anti-perspirant? Deodorant by its self does not prevent sweating. Just asking.

Another vote for Darn Tough Socks. You will likely pay $27'-$35 per pair. I have many pair in 3 different weights. When you shop for them look for a high wool count in the composition of the socks. They have a good lifetime warranty. I get the over yhe calf socks. They stay up and in place well for me.
Shop at socks addict or gobros. They go on sale occasionally.
