I am looking to do more backpacking. I see all the standard backpacking meals but im wondering what alternatives you have found that is very cheap and light weight.

I still love MREs for living out of a pack. Break them down out of the original bag and there is no wasted space, super hi calorie meals, tasty, and after a couple days eating them they make great, predictable, clean turds. The last feature is maybe the best feature and can't be appreciated enough.

I think that was scientifically experimented on and found the perfect 💩 so they wouldn't have to put a bigger match book sized fold of tp in the mre's! 😂😂🤣🤣
Mre's are great but not too light compared to a MH or others.
I have looked at grocery stores and found
"Bear creek" dehydrated soups to be extremely tasty and some of them are 8 serving pouches! Minestrone, chicken noodle, chilli, mac n cheese. Stroganoff, all really good. Just make half and save for the next day or if multiple people.... Shelf life not even close but heck after the hunt make it for your wife and kids or a date and you'll be the hero! 🙌🏻👏👏👏👐🤲💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻👍🏽 They are that good. https://www.amazon.com/Bear-Creek-Kitchens-Minestrone-Broccoli/dp/B01N6QDL2A

I have just tried several of the Peak Refuel selections and will be switching to their brand for my 6 western mountain backpack adventures in 2021.

I was looking for taste, high calorie per ounce, high protein per ounce.

They are not cheap, though.

Also recommend the Peak meals. They're real food, taste really good and use little water relative to the competition. They're more expensive, but 100% worth the extra cost to me.

Andrew Skurka has a lot of trail proven low cost recipes on his website. You might check them out too.
