SOLD/EXPIRED NO LONGER FOR SALE - 6.5 280 Ackley Improved ( Remington 700 Action)

How many rounds fired? Any representative groups to show off?

75 maybe 100. I don't shoot it much.

I apologize I don't have any pictures of representative groups.
I wanted to get out and get some for this add but all the ranges here are closed due to Covid 19 and I can't travel outside of Salt Lake County right now.

Can you buy brass for this round or do have to form it. A very interesting caliber.

You mean cartridge I take it. The .264/6.5mm is a quite common caliber, but has gained a ton in popularity during the last 20+ years.

Quality cartridge would probably make it for you with that headstamp as a special order. Minimum might be 1000 cases plus setup costs.

That's not a bad idea. Do you have any idea ( ball park ) what they charge for set up cost ?

Thank you. 🙂

They do offer a basic case for that, but the idea is to get away from any kind of resizing/fire forming etc. The best thing would be to contact them and ask. Another thing would be to get a group together and try to order 10,000 or more or whatever quantity would be required to get a dealer price. If one didn't care that much about the headstamp, something like the .270 AI would be great because with necking down and trimming you could get .25-06AI and 6.5-06AI. You'd need to neck down [no trimming needed] and fire form to move the shoulder up 0.050 to get to your case.

I doesn't matter to me so much about the head stamp. It would be nice to have the correct stamp if you were ever to travel out of the country with it. I've only ever necked down 280 AI cases because they are available commercially and that's what they told me to use when Benchmark built it for me. You don't have to fire form or even trim those but I would think that 270 AI case would be better. Less stress on the case when you resize the neck I would think. Can you buy those 270 AI factory made ? If so who makes them ?

Another option is hydraulic forming die, I have custom-built by Whidden for my .30 LARA and it works like a champ.

That's awesome. Maybe I should just keep it. It's been awhile since I've done much with this particular rifle, hence the reason I am selling it. But all this talk kind of reminds me why I built it in the first place.
Thanks guys. I appreciate your help. Since no one has made me any offers on it yet I think I'm just going to hang on to it for now and play with it a bit more. 🙂

You're quite welcome! Have fun with it. Cheers!

I expect that they would be in the same boat as any of the AI offerings. Then again if headstamp and a .050 shorter neck in the .270 or .280 don't bother you just get a basic 6.5-06 case and cover everything. I agree on the out of country reason tho. The headstamp on the case has to match the cartridge description on the barrel. I bought some 6.5-06 Qual Cart from Graf and they look pretty nice in spite of the reviews posted there.

Another reference I found while nosing around on the net.

I like it. I'm going to give it a try. I decided just keep it. I wasn't getting to much interest anyway lol.

All's swell that ends swell. It's a great round for deer and antelope sized game. With so much barrel life left I'd consider the idea of setting the barrel shoulder back by .050.

The only problem with that is you still head space on the shoulder and the 280`s case body is longer than the 270`s.

Yeah possibly. Thats a great option for the future for sure. Honestly I posted 75 to 100 rounds fired to be realistic and cover the question asked more than honestly, but I'm not sure if I've even got 50 rounds through it yet. I have a good accurate load for it that was easy to come up with but I haven't pushed it by any means. I know guys that are shooting 4 to 6 grain more H4350 than I've been using with 140 grain bullets so my barrel is in great shape and realistically not really even broke in yet.
