Accidental Torture Test...

I worked in a body shop for years and once had to tow in a new Explorer. Some guys MN came here to shoot P dogs. While shooting over his hood. The P dog did not go down so he shot 4 more times then realized ti scope looked over the hood but the barrel did not. Real nice 5 shot group. Lol. Bullets bounced around under hood breaking things. Oops. Lol

Thought you all might find this amusing...

Out doing some load workup for my B-in-law's Marlin X7 243 yesterday. Was a slimy, greasy, slushy mess in the field I shoot in. Drove out to set my target, and on the way back I went mindlessly cruising by my shooting nest...

Doh!

Fortunately, I hadn't started shooting yet. I normally leave the bolt open for cooling while I go downrange to check my targets, and I certainly wouldn't have put the scope caps back on...

Got her cleaned off and proceeded to shoot without incident. Now I have to pull the action to clean up everything though...

Elk hunting I had my top sling swivel come loose when jumping a small creek with Win Model 70 280 w Leupold scope. Had my right hand on the sling when it came loose and in

About thirty years ago I was crossing a talus slope on a sheep hunt and the whole thing started to move. It's not that unusual and if you can keep your balance it may only go a short way and stop but this one went over a short drop and I ended up falling full on my rifle, heavy pack and all. When I got off the slope and checked the rifle the scope's objective lens was noticeable bent downward right at the threads. I was in the middle of a trip so I just grabbed it and bent it back upward. While I was looking for a place to fire it and check it out I came across a nice ram. I got within a couple hundred yards and fired a shot and it was right on the money. It was an old Lyman scope and I used it for a couple more years after that.

Elk hunting with Win Model 70 280, Shilen barrel and Leupold VXII 3x9. Jumping a small water flow with the rifle slung when the top sling connector came undone. Instinctively my right hand pulled up on the sling (should have just let lose), which accelerated the rifle in a pendulum swing mid-jump. The very end of the rifle barrel hit a rock hard!
I was hiking in back country and continued hunting until at dusk I jumped a cow elk at 75 yds. Got one broadside shot off as she ran and she disappeared into timber as if not hit. Upon checking I was elated to find she expired a short distance into the timber. Hit thru the boiler works, near perfect shot.
Upon returning home, on the bench the rifle shot 5" below my 4" high zero point. The scope was not banged, only the barrel. So I assume the barrel remembered the hit. Fortunately no big deal on a 75 yd shot on an elk.
The gun was never a tack driver, about 1.5 moa group, and shot about the same after that.
For those interested, I hand loaded 175 gr Nosler partitions at 2750 fps with IMR 4350, nothing grouped better than that load. Took 13 elk with that load, several at 400-600 yds with excellent success!

I was out in the boondocks looking at some oilfield locations. I see a coyote about 200 yds away. I tell my client who is riding with me to hand me my 22-250. I rest the rifle in the edge of the door. Looking though the scope, something is obscuring, partially, my view of the 'yote. I looked up and the barrel is pointed at my mirror. If I hadn't looked, I would have blown off a very exepensive self folding, electric mirror...

Out at 29 Palms we were setting up a pause for a M198 Howitzer, after the howitzer was laid the gun truck driver needed to move the 5 ton. While he was moving the truck he backed over five M16A2 rifles that had been stacked. It was dark and he didn't have his A-driver guiding him. Talk about hell to pay.

If you can see lightening and hear thunder, they'll issue you a military drivers license. ;-)

Well I might as well join in. I had a Pro Chrono that took a direct hit from a .243. many years ago I was deer hunting in Nv..
I slung my rifle over my shoulder and the front swivel stud pulled out of the stock. Rifle went around and scope slammed into my rear bumper. I cussed a little. Figured it was ok. I shot at a buck at about 250 yds. Was high. When I left I set a pizza box at 100 yds. Shot twice. Both about 10 in. High and 5 in. Left. Was an old Redfield I think. I have plenty more stories but I'll spare you all.

I once dropped a .300 win mag on a rock. Took a chunk out of the side of my Nikon prostaff scope. It held zero.

Good slushy mess of a torture test for that action.

and here I've been listening to my brother in law (a sworn leupold lunatic! :) ) who's been saying that the Nikon scopes look and feel "cheap", poorly made, like they'd break easy. If they hold zero after breaking who cares?

.. .. .. leaning across the hood of his new truck, getting ready to shoot a speed goat. When she shot, gun was too low-- left a nice crease across the hood.
A friend of mine did that to his very well-kept 2000 Dodge Ram 2500. Cost him what you'd pay for a new Nightforce to repair it...

Patrol rifle qualification. One of my new range masters can't help himself brings one of the brand new Dodges to the range. Live fire, some moving targets, scenario based training including a short pursuit course that terminated on the range. Five old Crown Vics did fine. Brand new Dodge, shot three times. I was the boss, I wrote the Dear Chief memo;
Also had one of our female officers take three pieces of hot 556 brass down the back of her BDU trousers. That was quite a sight.
