After 8 pages of comments, I would guess that some still feel that, regardless of the politics of any state of residence, there is the undeniable factor of human population and its' influence. As to the original post, I would say that any rural area that has not become a commercial center, has a chance of staying nice for a while.

I'm a little apprehensive as I write this. I'm a CA native(?). Well at least I was born here 67 years ago. I drove truck for almost 25 years most of it running interstate. While I've seen the US and Canada, I haven't lived there. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, but I see the day of financially needing to move. It getting too expensive on a fixed income and my body is just not cooperating! Arthritis is taking me apart. BUT!!!! Our nearest town is nearly an hour away. I hunt my own place and have access to several thousand acres of private land. The front gate is nearly a mile away. Nearest neighbor about the same. My taxes are very reasonable. Cost of living can be cut if you work at it. Eat what I hunt, heat with wood and save extra money for the AC in the summer. Yep, there's cheaper places to live. I go to my buddies place in AK at least once a year. He's in Happy Valley on the Kenai peninsula. Costs there are very high. The local politics are terrible! I will probably have to move some day. Where? I have no idea. I couldn't live anywhere I couldn't pee out the front door if I wanted.

I was stationed in socal for 15 years. I feel your pain and desire to flee enemy territory. I married a MT girl and moved to southwest MT 7 years ago. I would love to recommend moving here, but I can't. When we first bought our house the nearest house was half a mile away. I had three shooting ranges on the property. Now there are six houses within bow range and I've had to move my shooting ranges several times. I have leftist neighbors who call the cops every time I'm shooting, fixing fence, planting trees without their permission, or peeing in the yard. I have no covenants, no HOA and can legally do whatever I want. But the leftist who have ruined their own states with idiotic legislation, taxes, and permits, have now fled the ship they ran into the iceberg, and are set on recreating their failures here. We can't seem to vote the "D's" out of office and now even have one running for president. I understand I'm a "transplant" as well, but I moved here to become a Montanan. I've always been conservative, patriotic right. Coming from Cook County IL, and being stationed in California for 15 years I had 35 years of examples of what doesn't work, regardless of rhetoric. But those who can't learn from history are moving here, building here, then trying to ban logging and lumber mills Ironically the same timber industry that provided them the resources to build THIER homes. They have even successfully banned shooting in some public land area's so they can hug trees without hearing gunfire. And have now successfully put me out of work at the lumber mill. They have brought in out of state money to buy up lumber leases on USFS land to prevent logging it. It will just burn in a forest fire and be worthless. Just like happens in California every summer because of the same tree hugger mentality and legislation. I know I fought forest fires there for 5 years. I'm rambling but you get my point. This ideology is like any other parasite. It moves in, leaches off the host until the host withers and dies, and then the parasite moves onto it's next victim. I would not recommend southwest MT. I am stuck in a VA home loan that required me to dwell in the home for 9 years. After the house is paid off, we both might be fleeing this area for the same reasons I fled California. The parasites surround us...…..

Ok I need to jump in here as well. I too am a life long conservative Californian and have thought about moving out. I am also part of the "State of Jefferson" movement (for those of you not familiar, its about representation). At some point every one of us has to stand and fight! You can run but you also see what is happening all over the west. We have a cattle ranch here (1500 acres) and the state is now requiring that we "register" our stock ponds that have been there for 100 years! Once you do that (and of course pay a fee) then they want it certified at your expense and so on. We all have skin in the game and it's past time to push back. Don't leave, STAND & FIGHT! Or our way of life is over. All you folks in purple states, you see what's coming.

In Ca. they will tax you on everything and squeeze a dime out of you so they can spend on bs and pad thier pensions . Newsome make Brown look like a moderate.

I was born and raised in Socal and stayed until Jerry Brown was reelected in 2010. Took me 32 days to get out. I moved to the Reno area, then to the Carson City area. As for big game hunting, we have Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, 3 different Bighorn, Wild Turkey and Bear. Moose have began moving into northern Elko County. If I were to move and wanted a rural area where your left alone, I'd move to the Lovelock area. They have a rifle range that goes from 0 to 600 yards. Never seen it crowded. I'm a 74 y.o. 100% Disabled Vietnam Combat Veteran. Vet and Senior Combo Hunting and Fishing License with Trout Stamp and second rod costs $15.00 for the year, from date of purchase, not a Calender date like CA. Resident Elk Tags are $120.00, Bighorn tags are $120.00. Antelope tags are $60.00 and Mule Deer are $30.00. It is a lottery draw. Last year I drew a Mule Deer Buck tag znd a Cow Elk tag. I scored with a monster sized Buck. A 4x4 that was at least 6+ years. It dressed over 200 lbs sans head, skin and guts. Property is not that expensive out there. Your an hour from Reno, with Bighorn, Deer and Antelope practically in you back yard. Carry permits are given upon filing paperwork and classes. I just didn't renew mine because it's also an open carry State. NO PERSONAL income tax in Nevada. The Elk are Rocky Mountain Elk, not Roosevelt nor Tule Elk. The Bighorn are California Desert, Nelson Desert and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn. Mountain Sheep also. Migratory bird (Geese and Duck) small game and here NO hunting license is required to hunt Coyote here also. Fishing is great with big Brown trout in the Truckee Rivef. Lahoten Cutthroat in Pyramid Lake the go over 30+ pounds. Check out this area in Nevada, you'll love it. People are mostly respectful of others. Good luck on your retirement. I attempted to. I even informed him of how I would react if it was HIM that showed up at the door. I won't go into how the conversation went but nothing was getting though. He felt that his agency was in command and that they decided what I had the privilege to have and do. And any resistance would be overcome with force from his magical abilities. Like I said he was no longer the guy I knew. Combine that story with the same agency denying my CCW permit after 14 years of decorated service being deployed 200+ days per year for portions of it. I agree with that your really hit a nerve with the forum followers to have generated this many comments so quickly.
I left CA in the early 90s because of the concerns stated previously. I ended up in eastern Washington 10 years ago when I was nearing retirement. Wish I had foreseen the changes to come as I would have picked Idaho to buy me a few more years in front of the blue wave. If I were to move again today, I'm not so sure I would pick Idaho as it seems like the same thing is happening there, though lagging WA and OR. As with most of the states considered in the thread, the problem isn't the local rural folks, its the big demographic locations that push their agenda on others.
My only new contribution to the thread is to be very careful when you leave to work out all your tax issues so you absolutely severe every thread with CA. The state is very aggressive in pursuing taxes and you don't want to be funding their policies after you leave. They hounded me for 15 years after I left and my California registered employer almost got me back in that mess when I retired after more than 20 years of working overseas and living out of CA. I think there was a law suit from a retired LEO back in the 90s that overturned the CA law that you owed taxes on your pension regardless of where you lived if you earned the pension while working in CA. Regardless, with you retiring out of CA, I would suggest you research up how to assure you disconnect completely from their state tax requirements.

I'll admit that years ago I stopped spending time on this site because it was a little bland and boring politically. Plenty of good shooting and hunting stuff but not enough "testicular fortitude" when it came to current events. Just my opinion at the time, calm down old guys.... Texas is not lost! Texas was a republic and has the right to return to that point. The state of Texas Flag has the right to fly at the same height as the US flag. If the SHTF I cannot think of a better place to be. Trump is trying to stop the hemorrhage and influx of illegals at the Border. are your friends serious? From my understanding, bloomburg bought out wash state's votes not that long ago, he was focusing on california oregon and washington. He helped cripple oregon pretty effectively, don't think so, look at the proposals for gun registration, and all the guns they want to make illegal, not to mention accessories. I'm eyeing Idaho or Montana. Not as much call for Engineers in Wyoming. No way I'm moving to Colorado. Would be moving from Alabama. Everyone says Alabama is safe but it's more of the same.
