7 mag brass problem

OK They are Lee dies & the mark is being caused by sizing not firing. The press is a Forster Coax so I don't think it needs adjusting. Like I said if I adjust to rid the ring above the belt it pushes the shoulder back too far. I have been using Lee dies on other cartridges for 20 years & never had a problem. I also use RCBS & Forster dies in other calibers. If I need a different die I'll get one but if that does the same thing then what?

We need lots more info. Is that where the die is scraping the brass from the shell as you push it into the die? If so perhaps you have a bad shell holder and is not aligning with the die? or maybe the shell holder is not fully seated in the press ram. if the scrape does not go all the way around them something is out of align. Check the die bottom and see if the edge is sharp? It would be the edge past the belt relief.

this happens after you full length size the brass? can you measure your unfired brass in that area and your fired brass?
it looks like your die is working the brass a lot in the body. are you using case lube?
Yes. Tried different brand lubes & same problem. Don't have any unfired. All I can do is go by SAMi specs. It looks like it's pushing the brass to that collection point.

No shell holder Coax press. The scrape does go all the way around I scraped some off with my fingernail. Bottom of die was smoothed with steel wool & polishing compound. No ridges.

twister@ I don't have any fired cases. Ran them all thru the die trying to make adjustments.

Ok then it is certain that you have a sharp edge in your die. Second measure the diameter of the fired case and the dia of the sized case at the scrape. I personally would try a different die. What gun is this case fired from is it new to you etc..

No sharp edges in die. Gun is new to me Savage 110 as is 7mag caliber. OK should I get a different fl sizing die or go with a bushing bump die or collet die & body die or Innovative Tech body collet die & neck sizer die? If I have to get another die I will just don't want to end up with 6 dies I don't need & still not solve the problem. It seems the case is a little fatter near the belt & the die is scraping that excess off unless I turn the die down farther. Then I get no brass buildup near the belt BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>the shoulder gets pushed back way too far!

Die or chamber are out of round. If the ring happens at the same position of the brass as it goes into the die then it's the die body itself. If the scrape happens all around when you size then it would be the chamber since you wouldn't be putting the fired brass in with the bulge at the same location each time.

If it's always the 5 o'clock position of the rounds as it goes into the die then it would be the die

Hopefully that explains it well enough.

Happens all the way around. Brand new X caliber barrel. 100 rounds fired. Question?? If the head space was too long r short would it make the brass bulge near the belt?

You need a chamber cast but I'd be willing to bet it's a bad chamber. I have several X-Caliber barrels and they are flawless. I'd send them a message if you want to skip the cast. If you email them add this thread URL

I could mail you a couple of brass fired in a factory stock Rem 700 from the 1980s. Sold the gun years ago, but still have a few hundred brass.

If you get no marks, then it's likely the rifle. If you do get marks, then it's likely the die.

PM me your address if you want to try it.

Had the exact same thing happen to me with one of my belted mags. I was using Weatherby brass and all was good. Came to a point where I had to buy brass and I bought some Federal nickle plated brass and ran into this very same problem. When I adjusted the die down enough to easy chamber I began having case seperations. When I re-adjusted to get .002-.003 shoulder bump the problem came back. I switched back to Weatherby/Norma brass and the problem went away. I really don't know the cause, maybe a batch of soft brass, not sure. Does this happen to you with different lots of brass
