New Long Range Rifle Scabbard for horseback hunts

My dad and I have used and sold the Trailmax Guardian Rifle Scabbard for years and it served us well on horseback hunts. We often brought our own scabbard along on outfitted hunts because most outfitters' scabbards wouldn't fit our large long range rifles with bulky optics. But the Guardian scabbard didn't quite fit our rifles all the way inside and it was a tight fit so pulling our rifles out in a hurry was tricky.

This year Trailmax came out with a new larger Long Range Rifle Scabbard which is just perfect! We sell it at The Long Range Hunting Store.

The new Long Range Rifle Scabbard offers complete protection for a scoped long-distance sporting rifle while traveling or hunting. Padded with high density, waterproof foam and shielded by a tough 600d, PVC-backed polyester fabric shell, your valuable investment will be well safeguarded. The scabbard accommodates most scoped hunting rifles up to 54" in total length. Scabbard will fit most rifles with bipods as well.

Inside, the scabbard is lined with ultra-soft, sueded fabric to protect the rifle's finish, with padded "bumpers" all around the zipper for added protection. The rifle is held in place with a pocket for the barrel end and four velcro straps, which can be moved where needed for the most secure placement.

Heavy-duty straps with brass buckles allow you to secure the TrailMax Long Range Rifle Scabbard to a saddle or ATV, while padded handles make it comfortable to carry. The heavy-duty, full length zipper has lockable brass sliders. Keep ammunition, notebooks and other small necessities close at hand in two zippered outside pockets. Dimensions: 56"L x 12"W x 3"D. I've got 5-6 of the old trailmax rifle scabbards. They are absolutely bulletproof. My favorite scabbard. This new Scabbard isn't the same toughness and durability as the old ones. I bought this new scabbard this year for my deer hunt. First couple days the bottom ripped out by the zipper making it basically junk. Contacted trailmax about warranting it and they refused saying it was abused and I drug while on horseback. Maybe I did..... I don't recall getting it in a bad spot.
The old ones I've drug thru downfall, rocks, trees, snow, mud, every nasty thing you see when hunting in the wilderness. Always protected my guns and taking the beating and just smiled and kept on going, never been able to tear the old ones up.
This new model does not stack up to the old one model. It's nice so you can travel with your bipod on and your longer barelled rifles. But it's not tough like it's older brother. Mine is junk and won't be used again. Went back to the old ones. Great idea not so great product. Extremely disappointed with product and trailmax not standing behind their product.

I wouldn't mind seeing how you guys rig that scabbard on your horses. I've rigged mine right side, under the fenders and didn't like it very much. Ideas welcome.

If somebody has pictures that would be great. I'm looking at getting one but them seem pretty bulky to be rigged like a leather scabbard. Any thoughts their size?

I will try to get some pictures next week. I'm leaving for Vegas today otherwise i would take pictures today. I love the thought process on it but believe it's too big and bulky to effectively utilize when you are spending all day in the saddle in the hills

Ha ha, that's about the size of it too. They're bulky for sure. I rigged mine under my fender and it threw my leg out so far that I couldn't communicate to my mule with my right leg. They should sell spur extensions with those things.

Yeah I started carrying mine in a more vertical position behind me. Not very speedy getting my rifle out. But like mentioned above carrying it under my saddle doesn't work for me riding my mules

Does it stick up high enough that it is hard to swing your leg over the saddle? I have been looking at upgrading to one of these. I had my wife help me sew one up so I can carry my long barrel rifles with bipods, and this looks a lot more legit. My concern is that it is so bulky and would be a PITA to attach to the saddle

Depends on how tall your pony is lol. It can be tho. I like to connect the top strap to my saddle ring on top and tr lower strap to my rear cinch

Interesting - I'll try it. I have always ridden with it sitting more verticle up front, but it can be kind of a pain and get in the way of the reins.
