Tomorrow is the last day of deer season here. After an abysmal season of seeing next to nothing I was desperate to get something, ANYTHING. anyway….I'm very happy with my deer here, it's no Boone and crocket but for a meat hunter like me it's a darn nice buck. The hammer hunter 75 grain out of the 257 Weatherby at 4150 fps performed amazingly. I had my nervousness about such a light bullet going so fast, I like exit wounds…and I got that! Broke a rib going in, broke two ribs exiting, hit farther up and back than I meant to and the beast still piled up in less than 20 yards from where it was shot. Shot was probably somewhere between 250 and 300 yard, didn't measure, just eyeballing it that seems right. Some pics of the deer in the field where it lay and then of the head on a tractor tire haha…

Entry and exit wound on the skinned out and hung up animal, just for the curious. Basically no meat damage (deer ribs don't count much for meat haha) Found a single copper petal under the hide on the offside. The entry sure is tiny! Even at these speeds this sure is a less violent and destructive round than my .300 win mag I've used for the 5 years before this, at least if we're comparing light for caliber monos going fast…ah come to think of it I've never used hammers in the 300 either, maybe an apples to potatoes comparison…but anyway, puts them down just as fast it seems.

I did indeed. Struck out last weekend but spent three nights at his place nonetheless, and one more this weekend. Good to catch up and drink coffee together.

ALSO…as an extra treat, the northern lights were out and very bright and lively tonight with both red/pink and green visible, and for once I was able to actually get some half decent pictures of them.
