If your Daughter came to you and asked your help on the decision of what make of hand gun should she own what would that be?

I keep going back to the Browning .45 but I like the smith and wesson or a baretta.

Sub compact XD 9mm, or 40 S&W
1911 like Kimber etc it always a great choice.
I pushed for those, but....
My wife has a pink Walther. The option of the different palm inserts helps fit her hand, & that what she likes best.... Oh well. As long as she's comfy with it.

Sad thing is I'm more accurate with her pink girlie gun than most of my own....
Still too embarrassed to go out in public with it tho:D

I was thinking about myself, The Rangmaster in Colt 1911, but Smith and Wesson has a MnP
that in a bit smaller. I have been hoping she would start with a .22 but she is looking for more boom!

I'd take her to Cabela's and Academy (or Dick's or whatever you have up there in Canada) and every gun store I could find and let her handle as many pistols as possible. Figure out what about each she likes and doesn't like and then narrow it down. Then try and shoot as many of that smaller list as you can find. Then let her choose. My wife ended up preferring a GP100 loaded with 38s. Who knew.

I would let her shoot as many as we could get her hands on and choose what she shot best. If it is a .22 so be it, teach her to shoot for eyes. Training is far more important than the choice of weapon. Proper training will save a lot vexation. Muscle memory also helps getting a gun into action properly.

My suggestion would depend on a couple things, is she strong enough to manipulate the slide of any semi-auto pistol for loading and unloading safely? If not get a revolver.

Is she going to have a purse gun or be holstered on her body? If purse gun she need to keep her purse clean of debris that may get in the working parts, or have a purse with a dedicated pocket. Inadvertently an object could push on the mag release and when she needs it she could grab a gun with one bullet only. And if auto pick one with-out a safety, if she trains with a striker fired model and never uses the manual safety, and she draws the gun with the safety switched on because it was flipped in her purse she will likely pull on the trigger and nothing happens, by the time she realizes the mistake it could be too late.

If she is not going to shoot the gun for practice every week, go with the revolver.
No controls to manipulate other than pull the trigger.

Semi autos have one major issue for concealed carry if they are loaded and unloaded repeatedly. If you don't recycle the rounds and you don't shot and replace the rounds, you can destroy a primer by repeatedly working it through the gun. The inertia of the cartridge being picked up and slammed to a stop repeatedly can brake down the priming mix and move it from the anvil causing a miss fire. I read that after 3-4 entry's the round should be put aside for practice time.

I am carrying a revolver and if you asked me a year ago I would say never but I just love this little sw 38. It is a discontinued model but it looks similar to this 357.

The difference is the 38 has one large top port and is black, also weights 19.5 oz loaded. I like the fact it has the full barrel shroud and the grip is long enough to get the pinky finger on it.

If she decides on an auto get a striker fired auto with no manual safety lever. I am assuming she is going to carry, if it's just for plinking then whatever she likes.

I like all your input. I was concern the hammer would hook the pocket in her purse.
My babe is serious about buying a handgun..She has to walk a long distance to her car every day. I startd her with a .22 a .223 and my 7MAG and loves to hit the Range with me. we were at a close range area(35 yards) and was talking to some of the guys who were blowing off some rounds they let her shoot and before I knew it she had shot just about every shooters handgun.
The guys would set there weapons loaded for her, I realy think they enjoyed it more than she did, there was one guy with a Desert Eagle and he would no let her shoot it even a .44 MAG
was off limits and she got real good fast, thats why she wants to get a hand gun for the range and to get a permitt.

He's not in Canada (OP) he's in Michigan, like me. A bit farther north, just a bit. Gander Mtn, Cabelas, Guns Galore (Fenton), Dicks or Bass Pro.

I probably have 20 hand guns, all calibers all ,makes and my wife and I both have concealed carry's and in my perspective, any female with the exception of maybe Rosie O'donnell can't handle the recoil of anything larger than a .38 and if they can. can't control it.

My wife totes a .380 pocket rocket. I like a Kimber full size 1911 Crimson Carry myself or my pocket friendly Bond derringer with a .45 Colt in one tube and a 410 shot shell with number 8, in the other..... get their attention with the number 8 and blow their brains out with a .45 colt.....:)

I don't like thinking about gun laws.....

The way the government's current tack is, we may be the next Canada and have laws that suck too.

I'm 65 miles from the border (Canada) and I don't envision visiting there again.......

I got my wife a small 5 shot smith 38/357. You can get a concel carry hammerless also

Never been to that part, only BC.
I was leaning more toward the Yukon in my statement tho, or, anywhere from the top of the Rockys to the Pacific, & Alaska. I gotta have my mountains, & big ol bears & other critters to hunt.

Rich French Canadian trapping history in Oregon too. Hey,our mascot is a freakin Beaver for goodness sake. If it wasn't for Hudson's Bay & many other brave independent trappers, trapping in Oregon, & a ton of fur trade history, we may have a cool mascot, but, it is what it is, because of history. I'm a sentimental history nut. High mountains, & empty spaces, This kind of country is where I feel at home.
I've been a lot of different places in the US, & everywhere else I've been is too crowded, or too flat, or both.
Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, & Colorado & Id imagine north of here wouldn't be much different. Anything else just won't do, for this cowboy, except maybe Arizona, & New Mexico. Seems to run from the Rocky Mountains to the west coast, & north or I'm just on edge, & uncomfortable, & crowded.

I'm sure there are great places farther east too. I just haven't been the to see it yet. Only been as far west as Texas so far.

Northern Ontario is where I hang one of my hats, I love the country but there gun law do suck
AND!!!it blows too! If I ever took any of my rifles into the Soo crossing over they would **** there pants.
Time for bed..my wife is under 40 boys, I better get my VIAGRA. and stiff shot of prune juice.
