Daughters first elk- it's not supposed to be like this...

Fantastic!!! My 15yo son hunts with me all the time, but I can't get my 12yo daughter to come with me. One of these days I guess. Such a fantastic memory for you two!!!

What a great memory for years to come , and the thrill of the hunt.

She will be passing this along to many others .

My 12 year old daughter has been looking forward to a youth cow tag she drew all year. She got the wrong idea of elk hunting though. It's supposed to involve suspense, suffering, bitter cold, long steep hikes, disappointment and days of hard work.

Well this time it didn't work out that way, 15 minutes and a short hike into our first morning we got into a load of elk bedded in the timber in fresh snow. The wind was swirling and I worried they'd spook at any moment. It was a tense couple of minutes trying to find a clear shooting lane but a mature cow stopped in an opening and my girl made a perfect shot off the shooting sticks with a Savage 308 at about 130 yards. The shot broke both shoulders, double lung, top of the heart and came to rest in the hide on the far side. I've never seen an elk go down so fast.

Easy packout and she's feeling pretty confident and pleased! Couldn't ask for more!

Congrats Dad. That's outstanding! I bet from your coaching and teaching, she won't think it's always that easy

Great for her! And kudos to you for teaching her to shoot and hunt.

Congrats, love the SST. Son took his first elk at same age. Great moments for you. There will be plenty more years for those long hard hunts.

congrats! well done. She will really earn one someday! lol. Thats the way I like to hunt elk. hahahahaha close to the truck

Congratulations, good job to the young lady, and dad, good on you for teaching and encouraging your children. One of my two sons loves to hunt and fish, we've got some great memories to share. My other son, not a hunter, but we ride motorcycles, and fix old trucks together, again great memories. My point, spending time with your children teaching them your passions then let them decide what they want, you win either way. You end up with adult children who are also your hunting or motorcycle riding partners.

Good job to both of you....mind if I ask what that rifle is?
Will83 got it right, it's a Savage 11 Hog hunter in 308. 20" threaded medium barrel with irons. I'm yet to find a load it doesn't shoot well, one of my favorite rifles.

Congratulations to you and your daughter! That's awesome!!!! May you both have many more safe, productive hunts shared together!
