.338 Win Mag for lrh elk

Side note: never understood why they made a smaller case for the 338, when they already had the 300 case. Baffles me to this day.
The .338 WinMag came before the .300.

Op: I agree with "what's your definition of long range". Given the right load, barrel length (muzzle velocity) and right altitude I'd say it's very capable. Is it the right tool for the job (LR elk)? Not ideally but it'll do it.

Yes. It's great elk round like a couple others have already said stick with the 225-230 grain bullets. And you'll be golden. What action will it be built on?
Well, I've found a factory take off barrel that's only 20" long... which's kind of weird. I have a savage lightweight hunter and 20" is the norm for it.. However I understand 338 is hampered by a short barrel. Is that even worth doing?
Would be trying to keep it a light mountain rifle.
If I could stand the recoil.

You'll handicap it a little with the short barrel. Depending upon the weight, and fit.....recoil shouldn't be bad. With a barrel that short, a "can" or brake which many seem to love may be an option! 🤔 memtb
