300 Rum or 300 Rum Ackley Impr.

I would not bother fire forming a 300RUM. You are going to use up precious barrel life of a rifle that will get 800-1000 rounds. If you want extra horse power seat the bullet out longer in the case and run N570. If you want the extra 100-150FPS send it to Defensive edge or Unknown munitions and have them +p the chamber. My 30" 300RUM that I am trying to sell gets 3050 fps with H1000 and a 230 Bergers at 3.830". With N570 it would add a lot more velocity. If I had the bullet out at 4.070" I could get more powder in there.

EDIT: My next 300RUM barrel with be a single feed around 4-4.070".

A 215 Berger seated to 3.930" in a 300RUM with n570 in a 20" carbon six barrel could get you 3-3100fps.

I'm doing 3,000 fps flat on a pair of factory 26" bbl'd 300rums at 3.650" with 225 hdy hpbt's and rl33 (or rl50)... The 300 rum is big enough already that you have to push a LOT on case capacity to get any real gain. I haven't really bothered to work with my 300rums lately. One of the rifles wasn't shot last year; the other was shot twice, and one of those shots took a mule deer buck.

Ok. Thanks. I don't hunt with my 300 RUM at all. I hunt with a 7PRC which was a 7mm Rem, Mag or my 300 PRC. I really don't hunt much any more. Killed too many growing up on our ranch.
So my 300 RUM is just a Paper or steel ELR gun. I currently shoot a 33XC & 375 Cheytac..Sometimes my 30 Sherman Magnum or my 338 LM or 300 PRC.The 300 RUM and 338Edge+P are just ELR guns in Light Class for places that dont have targets past 2500yds.
Idont worry about barrel life. IF it makes one season Im good. I dont want one burning out in mid season either.

I am thinking of a new big gun. I can do either, 300 Rum or the 300 Rum Ackley Improved. My thinking is that I get these ideas, build a rifle, shoot a small amount of rounds and then usually get bored with it, or it sits in the safe. The 300 Ackley of coarse will have to be fire formed before getting much brass to work with but I do have a reamer at my disposal. The simple way would be to do the 300 Rum. The rifle will be a 28" barreled 8 twist. The 28" should give me plenty of velocity with the 212 or 225 ELD-x. When I get bored, I think the 300 Rum would be easier to sell if I decided to do that. I think with the 28" barrel and the 300 Rum A/I , I could pick up another 150 fps. Is the 150 fps worth the extra work making the fire formed brass, and possibly not being able to sell the rifle down the road, plus the reloading dies. I was considering the Carbon Six barrel for the build. I would think 3100 with the Rum and 3200 with the Rum A/I. What do you all think ?

Thanks for any input,
Tom

So why are you selling it?

same Reamer//Chamber.. Its working real good. I,ve ran it up to 3190 with 250 grain Hornady A-Tip with my fire form barrel. I ran the match barrel to 3160 fps and it shot a nice 5 shot group at 100 yds and 300 yards and 600 yards.. I am going to stretch it out to 1780 yards at my friends place.Thats as far as he has to shoot safely.. And Its very accurate. So far Im very pleased.
As far as the 338 RUM Im going for the 338 EDGE
Shorter barrel and build off a different action.
what action do you have and length barrel now and what action & length barrel are you changing to?
