Looking at getting a new rifle. I'm going to use this for long range hunting. eventually in the future i'm going to build this rifle into a custom build. I was thinking about getting a winchester model 70 extreme weather ss to start with in 338 win mag. what do you guys think?

That would be a good start, and the 338 win is already a good capable round.I have seen buds nock elk down to 800+ with them stock.

Nice choice. Nobody ought to be without at least one nice Mod 70.. .gun)

If you look around on classifieds and gunbroker though you can occasionally find one in 7mmSTW and I've even seen a couple done in 300 Rum.

My latest was a stainless laminate in 300wm and I love it.

Mauser34 where are you located?

Camp Lejeune, NC. I was thinking of get the 338 win mag and having it clambered to 338 lapua if possible

Not possible with a Mod 70 I don't think unless you got the same model action as their big safari rifles and I'm not even sure you could then.

300 Rum and maybe 338 Rum should be possible though.

Those with more expertise on the .338L will chime in I'm sure however.

I'm trying to decide between the ultimate shadow, ultimate shadow ss and the extreme weather ss. I don't care about the stock because that will be the first thing I change. What I'm looking at is the action and the barrel. I know the extreme weather has a fluted barrel. What I'm wondering is what is the contour on all three rifle barrels and what are the diameters at the action and the muzzle and which one would you guys choose for a future custom rifle build?

I called and asked about barrels a while back and as I recall the finished diameter on the fluted barrels is .720 or .75, about the same as the Lilja #5.

The sporter barrel on my M-70 ss 300 win is .620.

I'd imagine the fluted bbl is going to be the same as the first because they aren't doing any fluted bbls that I'm aware in the .620's.

You can always try to find it on their site or give up and call like I did.

If you get the extreme weather, there no need to change the stock. It comes with a bell and carlson.

What would I have to do besides rechambering in order to fit a 338 Norma in the model 70 338 win mag?
