.257 roberts.need recommendations

I have a ruger .257 roberts that I havn't shot in years and a Shepherd scope i could put on it. Want to shoot long range for coyotes and targets and am wondering if maybe a 22-250, 223, or .25-06 would be better. I also want to target shoot at long range for fun.

Don't want to spend a ton, and could always pull a scope off another one of my rifles. I have a a leupold vari x III.

So , any reco's for caliber, and is there any good scope /rifle combos out there that have great reliability and value..Savage? trying to keep the rifle cost below $700

Of the Calibers you mention only the .25-06 would have much of an advantage over the Roberts.To get started a quality scope and good range finder would get you off and running.I've got three of the old Ruger .257 and they are all great shooters.If you reload the .257 is a really good coyote gun and will reach out to 700 pretty easy.if you want a little more zip any good gunsmith can turn it into a .257 AI for far less than the cost of a new set up.

with a 90 grain sierra blitzking you could kill any coyote at any sane distance with a 257 roberts. by the way i also have a ruger 257 roberts but havent had a chance to shoot it yet. hoping to go out on sunday to get some brass to reload and to sight it in

CB, thanks, that's the input I was looking for. I think I bought my Ruger .257 roberts in ~ 1987 and really dont' think I have more than 60-100 rounds thru it. I'm just getting back into shooting as my kids are getting close to hunter safety courses and I want to zero in this gun. not sure I know what the AI stands for or what it involves, but i do live in metro Denver and of course there is that Gunsmoke shop that I could go to. If anyone else knows of a good shop on the south side here by parker, castle rock, let me know.

the ai stands for ackley improved and all it is, is the shoulder is blown out to forty degrees for slightly more case capacity for more velocity

Some of the taper is also blown out of the case. The .257 A.I. is an easy conversion and gets you right on the heels of the 25-06 with better barrel life. It is a great round IMO. You can shoot std. .257 Roberts ammo to fireform and it shouldn't cost you more than $150 to rechamber........Rich

I have a 25-06 and (2) 250 savages which are not unlike your 257 roberts. While it's fairly easy to make hits at 700 yards with the 25-06, the 250 sav. take a little more finese. 500 is no real problem but pass that I have to be on my A game. I am just speaking for me. I'm shooting 115gr. Bal-tips at 2700 out of my ruger #1 250.
I'd give your roberts a go and change things if needed.
