stuck cases with hornady

Was sighting in my rifle today 338 lapua. And after the 3rd round all my cases were stuck and so was the bolt. I had to tap the bolt up and back then use a tipton 40" rod to knock it out . Later I cleaned the chamber and scrubbed it with a bore brush then ran a wet patch of hoppes #9 then oiled the bolt. Fired one round from the magazine and it cycled flawless. Wondering if the chambers is a bit rough cause its new ir the hornady brass is just low quality. I seen brass shavings in my bolt head.

Sounds like it was over loaded....

What rifle are you shooting it out of?

The brass on the bolt face is not from the ammo, its from the bolt, either there is a burr on the pluger ejector hole (if you have one) or the extractor cutting some off the rim as the bolt is closed and opened.

With the pressure that high, I am sure your getting some brass set back into the ejector hole which is not helping the problem any.

Knowing what rifle your shooting may help alot.

To clarify, he's got a Savage .338 111 LRH at least I do believe he has.....??

I've had no issue with mine but mine has been digesting Lapua/Lapua Scenars until I have sufficient brass to reload some.....

Wonder if this is the case of the too soft Hornady brass or too high case pressure???

I'd like to see a picture of the spent cartridge, taken from the back, the last one that stuck....

At the very base of the base or is the extraction lip bent??

On the bolt face? When I cleaned it it looked fine ,shot fine afterwards.

If the cases have shoulder dents after firing, that can be too slow burning powder. I had a LOT of trouble with all of my 300 Rums with cases sticking badly after 2 or three firings and they weren't over loads. These large base diameter cases "of lower quality" tend to expand easily at the web and spring back to only .001" clearance after full length sizing. This will cause it to stick every time! Factory loads come with approx. .005" clearance. The brass on the bolt is something else? That could even be from a round that chambers very stiffly which is common with the above scenario. Try measuring your case after full length sizing a case that has been fired about three times and see what it measures?. I have a feeling that with Lapua brass, the problem would go away.....

Call Hornady their brass is **** and they should swap you out with new. Everyone keeps blaming our Semi auto for it and Hornady called me and we discussed it. When they started making 338 Lapua they went off of the original prints from the 80's. Their isnt enough material in the base of the cartridge. They are and were having a ton of complaints in our Bad News rifles and the savages and many more because the base swells so much in the chamber it gets stuck. They sent me a case for testing and the new lot is better. They sectioned some Fac Lapua brass and found it is much thicker in the base and copied it.
I left the warning on our web site due to so much of the old brass out there no one knows which is which other than them.
Our semi would just rip the rim right off and we would have to use a cleaning rod to knock it out

They need ti get the lot # and discount all that old crap then. Not that I will buy it again.
Could you imagine if you was hunting a bear and you couldn't chamber a second round for a charge.
