Which bullet for big game (300. win mag)

I see a decent amount of people shooting thee 210 berger VLD's and with there high BC i was hoping to shoot them too. Now i was curious on there performance on thick bone like moose and close range?

Is it smarter to reload Berger's for long range and then another bullet like the accubond for shots that are closer like 300 yards or will the bergers hold up at closer ranges.

This has been debated and commented on many times on this forum , with varing opinions. I do use them, and on big elk too. I have taken bulls at 60 yards and from over 800 all with 210 Bergers in a 300 win. I think the main differences in results are more from velocity and shot placement, even tough I took a bull at 60 yards with a 30-378. I say you will be fine but I would put them tight in behind the front shoulder if I was taking the shot.

I will add, what ever bullet you choose, know how it works best, (velocity and placement for its characteristics) Then you probably will be smiling in a photo instead of on here whining about a bullet.

Berger specifically designed the 230 grain bullet for the 300WM. I will also suggest the 215 Berger.

Just to slightly clarify: The 230 Hybrid OTM was designed with the 300Win in mind. The nose is short enough to fit in tactical firearm magazines. There is however a new "target" line of hybrids. Any of these should work fine for hunting. The 215 grain bullet mentioned is one of the target hybrids, not an OTM.

I would instead go with a true hunting bullet with a high BC such as the Hornady Interbond, Nosler Accubond, or the Scirocco II's.

They won't blow up on you at short range and they will punch through bone a long way out.

I'll stick with the 180's at warp nine with bullets designed for the job.

I'm happily killing what I aim at out beyond 1,000yds with them and not blowing thigs up at close range either.

my 2nd and 3rd choice would be these two bullets but WR would tell you my second choice doesn't exist

If your guns really likes them and you can get good accuracy I would definitely go with the 200 Grain Accubond. Hands down. Just a great all around bullet. Still has a .588 BC too. That is really good for a premium hunting bullet in my opinion.

Interesting: I've yet to have a 210 Berger "blow up" on me even at close range on elk. They've penetrated well up close and soup up the vitals. As far as bone crushing, I've got a shattered chunk of bone hanging from the rear view mirror in my pickup from the bull I killed this year at just over 1K with the 210VLD, it was devastating and absolutely "bone crushing". Out of a 300 Win he won't be pushing the heavier Bergers fast enough to "blow up" anyway. But I don't know, these may not be a true hunting bullet.

This mirrors my experience too, as many already know.
I can honestly say I have tracked many elk and deer from some of the "Premium , True Hunting Bullets" penciling through with a tiny hole, some recovered some not. But never tracked one from a Berger VLD.

Use what you want, or have confidence in, it is a personal choice. But know how it works, what velocity , and where to place it for it to preform to its best ability.

And if you make a bad shot, "man up Nancy" it has happened to most all of us and none of us liked it.
