I purchased a rem 700 in 300RUM with a thumbhole stock 2 years ago and have been unsuccessful in developing a load using Retumbo & Reloader 25powders, 180G Swift Scirocco & 200 G accubond bullets. Had the unit check by local gunsmith and everything checked out OK and we did glass bead the stock to see if perhaps there was a little play. I was still not satisfied with the groups I was shooting at 100 yards (2-3") . I had put around 100 rounds through the barrel and called remington.
They sent a box and call tag for the rifle and checked it out. The work order mentioned that they recrowned the barrel. The test targets returned were shot with factory ammo 150G and 180 G bullets and were no better than the groups I was shooting. The groups were stated to be within remingtons allowable standards. Because I had trigger work preformed by the gun smith and the trigger weight was 3 lbs they legally could not send me back the rifle without replacing my original trigger with remington's new version of trigger for the 700.
I haven't had time to fire the rifle since it was returned to see if my reloads would perform any better. I can only guess what the new trigger will be like.
I would like the rifle to be used for elk in Montana next fall. After all that I guess I am looking for advise on what I should try next. I could cut my losses and get rid of the rifle, try working up a load again, or perhaps rebarrel the action with a custom barrel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
