I purchased a rem 700 in 300RUM with a thumbhole stock 2 years ago and have been unsuccessful in developing a load using Retumbo & Reloader 25powders, 180G Swift Scirocco & 200 G accubond bullets. Had the unit check by local gunsmith and everything checked out OK and we did glass bead the stock to see if perhaps there was a little play. I was still not satisfied with the groups I was shooting at 100 yards (2-3") . I had put around 100 rounds through the barrel and called remington.
They sent a box and call tag for the rifle and checked it out. The work order mentioned that they recrowned the barrel. The test targets returned were shot with factory ammo 150G and 180 G bullets and were no better than the groups I was shooting. The groups were stated to be within remingtons allowable standards. Because I had trigger work preformed by the gun smith and the trigger weight was 3 lbs they legally could not send me back the rifle without replacing my original trigger with remington's new version of trigger for the 700.
I haven't had time to fire the rifle since it was returned to see if my reloads would perform any better. I can only guess what the new trigger will be like.
I would like the rifle to be used for elk in Montana next fall. After all that I guess I am looking for advise on what I should try next. I could cut my losses and get rid of the rifle, try working up a load again, or perhaps rebarrel the action with a custom barrel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Is your rifle a sendero, with the heavy barrel? If it has a skinny barrel you may be shooting to fast the 300 rum can get HOT real fast I always would shoot mine and waite atleast 15 minutes between the first and second shot then 20 or so from 2nd to third shot. I have a load with retumbo it's 85.5 grains federal 215 match primers 210 grain berger OAL 3.65 . you may have to try different bullets some rifles just want like your favorite one I'm sure you know this already .

I have a Remington XCR, had the bed glassed, a pillar put in, and a muzzlebreak added. Last year I was shooting 92g of 7828ssc, and it was deadly accurate, but too much pressure. I decided to work up a new load this year. I backed the 7828 down and started back up. I used H-1000, Retumbo, and RL-25. All loads were with 200g Accubonds. All rounds were at 3.60 COL. The Retumbo at 95g was my best load. I would shoot three shot groups, then let it sit until it cooled. I then took the Retumbo load, and moved the bullet out .05 towards the lands until it was .05 off of the lands. 3.60 and 3.75 COL were the two best. I then loaded 10 rounds of both of these up, and they shot almost exact, but there was a little more pressure with the longer shells, and the shorter fits in the magazine. I just got back from the range, walked the gun out to 1000 yard. Had to make a little adjustment at the 1000 yard range, but all my other targets were awesome, but was able to hit a 4" bullseye at 1000 yards. Haven't stopped smiling. One more thing. When my gun is clean, it throws a wild flier. Way high. Good luck, I would try H-1000 and 7828ssc. Retumbo was awesome in my gun.

Great shooting,

I never tried this with my factory barrel but once I got my custom barrel Tim told me to always fire a sighter shot . what I noticed was My first shot out of a cold bore went low and right, then the next shots were touching. With a custom barrel you can pump more rounds down range and the heat want effect the group because the steele has been stressed relieved . Once I got my broughton barrel and shot it I can honestly say I can shoot 5 rounds after two sighter shots and never know the differnce except the merage off the barell because of the heat that's produced from the 300 rum If you ever get a custom barrel like hart , krieger, broughton you want look back just make sure to get a thick recoil lug my factory one from remington was itty bitty.

I have about 400 rounds through mine. I will definitely replace the barrel as soon as this one goes.

Wow im so sorry to hear that you are having problems with your 300 rum. For me on the other hand, I love my 300 rum bdl. I have found that mine loves 93 gr of retumbo, 200 gr smk but I have to seat the bulit so far out that I have turned it in to a single shot. I know a lot of people claim tight groups but mine will do a 3/4" group as fast as I can load it. The barrell gets real hot after I do that so I try not to, 1/2" groups on a good day when I do my part. Hope you get things worked out keep us posted

Thanks for your thoughts I will take all of your suggestions and let you know how we came out. It wil be a while before I can do this\Thanks again

My stepson gets MOA groups with his. It's no fun to shoot, kicks like a mule, but i've shot 4 inch groups at 400 yards with it. Barnes 180s TTSX with 100 grains of Retumbo. We neck size only using a bushing die.

Mine shot like that before I developed Retumbo Load for it. I'll have to check the load data for you. My load data is for a 180 accubond although it shot extremely well with a 200 gr nosler partition and was more predictiable. Also, for some reason mine only shoots accurately with new brass. Once fired brass causes erratic bullet behavior in my rifle thus I only reload new brass. I haven't had to reload since 2007 but I do remember that mine does not like a long bullet. Stick with the factory oal if your not already. How deep are you seating your bullet?

It's really important, for the sake of accuracy in the RUM, that as your finger lights the trigger that you keep both eyes open and your cheek welded to the stock. Kidding but also a serious point.

It sounds like you could benefit from a new barrel. If Remington sent you test targets after doing nothing (recrown) and said it was GTG and it was still producing 3-4" groups...so rebarrel it or sell it and start over.

I have heard that a lot of folks have had best luck with shorter OAL's using shorter bullets.

I have a heavy barreled 28"Krieger and shoot 190 VLDs touching the lands, 98g's of Retumbo with excellent results. My last trip produced 2.5" at 500yds.

It always suck when you pay good money for poor results. Hope it works out for you.

if the barrel is getting hot slow down, can you shoot better groups with other guns? try putting it on a lead slead. my 300 RUM will shoot sub moa with every thing i try retumbo with 200gr accubonds or 210 smk's all the way down to 150gr ballistic tips. at first it didn't shoot very good, then I stoped flinching;). did you break your barrel in properly?
