7mm Weatherby: Why so little attention?

Huge weatherby and nosler fan
Until the 28 7mm wby was it i. My opinion
I have a 28 now
Until the last few years with newer mags (nosler)I think wby had the top performance.
The 27 nosler is the only
One that really blows the wby mag out per cal. The rest are really
Close from what I've seen.
Always have and will like wby but I've also rebarrel do for faster twist rates on them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Again, let the record reflect I'm not presently wanting one, I'm happy with my .270 and .300 win mag. But if I ever for some reason need a 7mm this looks like a winner.
I had a Cooper in .270wby mag. Shot lights out but the weatherby magnum brass was pricey back then and even moreso and rare today. I had it re-barrelled by Cooper to .270win. The wby mag only gave me about a 5% performance boost while using a whole lot more powder and discomfort while shooting. I am more than happy with my decision.

It's plagued by the same "problems" as so many others. The benefits of long slippery bullets are undeniable. The wby 7, like many dozens of other fine chamberings was designed for the bullets of that day. Slow twists and SAAMI chambers that disallow those long bullets make these, otherwise fine cartridges, undesirable.

Order up a new 8 twist barrel and have it cut with .200" more freebore and you can reinvigorate a great cartridge with modern, form-factor bullets.

I liked the WBY cartridges. Then a wave of new magnums came onto the scene. I shot my ex-brother-in-law's 270 WBY a little bit, carried it on an elk hunt and liked the rifle quite a bit. That's the most experience I have with the WBYs though I've done a lot of research on them. I'd agree that it's a capable cartridge. I, personally, won't buy one because of the twist rate. Why would you go with a 7mm at that rate? Say you're getting a 7mm with a faster twist rate, a custom barrel, would the 7mm WBY be the first choice with the price and availability of their brass? Sure you could fire-form, but with options like the 28 Nosler and 7mm Practical, why would you? If I was dead set on a belted case, a 7x300 Win improved would be the first thing I'd be going for.

I have hunted all over Canada and into Alaska and the Mid-West, have several Weatherby's and all are shooters. 7 mm's were and still are my go to's have some 5-6 7MM now , 280 Rem x2 , 7mm's x3 , 7x57 x1 and with the Weatherby also have there 300 and 30-378 and love them all. Each has a special time and place to be used ! What did you do before these newer rounds came out ? My next Weatherby will be the 6.5 x 300 or there other 6.5 super round. Had a 28 in tube installed on my Weatherby with a Hart BBL after it was shot out ! Its all bullet placement .!!

Back in the day you could buy 50 rds of 7rem brass for $30ish. 7 mm weatherby brass was $20 for 20 pieces of brass. Extremely expensive for the times. Weather by mark 5 rifles were extremely expensive at the time. Seemed like only the rich guys that went on safari type hunts had them. 7 mm weather by was only offered in weatherby rifles. I think both of those killed the round. When they produced them in cheaper lines of rifles they killed like a mule and weren't very accurate. Mark 5 were accurate but the cheaper ones weren't. I think a lot of that was shooter induced because of the recoil. I think price is what killed most of weatherby stuff. So many other 7mm came around that did the same without extra expense of a weatherby. Back in 1990 I was going to buy one in 270 and all these factors steered me away.
kind of like I am with Apple phones and computers. expensive and proprietary so I chose Android. Now all the supplemental items are cheaper too and just as accurate.

the 7 WBY is certainly a good cartridge. As people keep mentioning, it's the barrel twist rate and cost of ammo that keeps me away from it. I went 7 RM and also have a 28 Nosler, so the 7 WBY never filled a niche for me. Furthermore, I understand if you slap a 26" barrel on the 7 RM and max hand load it, you can get within 100 FPS of the 7 WBY. No game animal on the planet will notice the difference b/t the 7 RM and the 7 WBY.

In all fairness had I known about the 7wby and it's real potential before discovering the 7mm STW I'd probably still be shooting one and have a couple of spares just in case.

Unfortunately my Dad had some sort of inborn prejudice against the WBY's and convinced us young they weren't worth messing with.

Eventually I learned he just couldn't tolerate the recoil.
lol...my dad too. Mu grandad never had one and told my dad they were too expensive for their performance or he would've had one. I bought my grandads Husqvarna 7mm RM 30 years ago from my grandma after he died. She was going to give it to my aunt that doesnt shoot. Its plenty accurate and enough gun for most everything but the biggest bears. $400 rifle that's just as deadly as a 1200$ Weatherby.
