Hello all,

I'm looking to build a list of custom actions out there that can handle/are built for the 338 Lapua Magnum boltface. Preferably actions that are very wet weather resistant and meant for hunting--and not hunting from a bench, but for carry hunting in the field in conditions that could get a little wet and where debris (tree needles, etc.) could conceivably get in the action a bit.

I did a search and could not come up with a post like this. If there is one out there, please direct me to it.

Please list the one you know and their contact info/website please.

Thank you!

Jon

Seeing as no one else wants to put in a good word for their rig I will :D
Simmer down Im kidden!!!

I'more than impressed with the Barnard, truly.
you can field strip the firing pin with no tools if required(big IF) theyre nothing fancy, I believe that is what makes them so atractive for a hunting application, the ONLY negative is no safety, but if it is for a long range rig is a safety really required? open the bolt! safe enough, no?

There is a link on one of my posts to a video with the chap giving one a mud bath, worth a look! or good ol youtube search would take too long.

NEXT!!! LOL

Well I too am going to suggest the Barnard too although I only have direct experience with their new P-Chey model I would see no reason that the 338LM boltface model would be any different, heck you can even get the 338LM boltface in the P-Chey model.

Here is a couple quick videos of my action that I am pretty sure is being referenced to in the first reply :)

Another action that comes to mind is the Surgeon XL. I have no direct experience with that one but know alot of people that like them.

Thanks

I don't have a 338 Lapua. But: The Lapua is based on a 416 Rigby case necked down to 338.

I do have a 416 Rigby. I built in on a 1917 Enfield action. Its long enough and plenty strong enough and cheaper then most other actions used on Lapua. Also you can get the cock on openning firing pin.

With most all the guns I build, I bead blast the actions and polish and blue the barrels. The bead blasted and blued actions hold up pretty good in bad weather.

Well I'll start by making a list of actions that will accomidate the 338 LM:

Remington 700
Lawton 8500
BAT
Surgeon XL

I'm sure there are more out there but these are the ones that I'm familiar with.

Now for the all weather part. You could blue, duracoat, park, etc... But why when you have the options of a birdsong finish or Black Nitride. Both of these finishes are chemically bonded to the metal and offer superior weather resistance to any spray-on or paint based finishes.

Thank you all for the input. Please keep it coming so we can build a good database. I have yet to see a website that brings all these togehter in one place, but here's several to look at:

Wouldn't the Lawton 7500 competition work for the 338 Lapua?

That Stiller TAC 338 looks pretty good for the price as well. Anybody have experience with these? No additional machining required hopefully?

Thanks! Keep it coming!

Check the gunsmithing portion of the forum. The prevailing opinion on these Stillers amongst the gunsmiths is that these actions are good to go - AS IS/DELIVERED.
Check with Shawn or Kirby - do not take my word for it. FWIW there is a group buy going on at snipers hide right now for these Stillers, the price break is outstanding. Do a search on the keyword Stiller and you will find the thread.

Thanks, Don. Hey, I'm just N of you in Whatcom Co.

From looking on SH, is appears that that buy does not include the TAC 338 made for the Lap 338 or 378 Weatherby cases--bummer.

Thanks for the info, nonetheless. Hopefully it'll help someone out.

OH MAN!!! That's right! My bad!

I was just up there in Whatcom Co today. This morning "she who must be obeyed" announced to me that I was taking her to lunch in White Rock and to get my rear out of bed. :D

On the way home we swung by Birch Bay and checked out a time share we bought into. It was very nice (Sand Castle Resort).

By the time we got out of there, there was not time to swing by Kesselring's on the way home. Settled for stopping in at Sportsman's in Burlington.

Shoot me a personal e-mail at [email protected], I just got a picture of a really nice blacktail buck taken on Friday in Whatcom Co. My buddies dad got him. It has some really narely non-typical eyeguards, since I do not have permission to post his pic's on this web site I will have to e-mail them to you.

Email sent.

Hard to go by Kesselring's without stopping in...

I got a spike bull last Sunday and packed him out Mon. and came home and put him in a friends cooler. Then went back the next day with my brother as he had cow tag starting Wed. morning. 45 min. after shooting light and two 428yd shots into the kill zone of a cow and he was done for the year. More packing...6 quarters out of the wilderness to the car for me this year--I'm not working out for a week...

heck you can even get the 338LM boltface in the P-Chey model

ONLY when they are doing a run of those actions!
Thats what I wanted to have but it was going to be a 8-9 month wait.
Bit of a bummer really! Still great guys to deal with!

BTW my 338 Barnard shot a .25" yesterday, one oval hole:D YAHOO!!!!

Does anyone have the link to Phoenix Actions? Can't seem to find it.
Jon and Don, I grew up in Burlington, now live in Sedro Woolley, and feel like I grew up in Kesselrings. Don, I would love to see the photos of the blacktail. My personal email is [email protected].

Here's the link: Phoenix Machine

There's more of us locally than I would've thought. Don showed me those pics and I recognized the guy that shot it as someone I worked with for a few years and have done a bit of shooting with! I called him the next day and got the story. Small world...
