Considering building up a 338 Lapua Mag or Ackleyized version of same ...

Does anyone have a right handed Savage Long Action Large Shank action available?

Also - anyone know if a 338LM can be built up on a small shank and if so what are the cons/tradeoffs?

Thanks in advance
Tim

That size magnum if anything needs to be on a large shank action. Then you have to get a bolthead. I am not real familiar with the .338 Lapua on the Savage action, even tho I own at least about a dozen of them. You could call Jim Briggs at Northland Shooting Supplies and talk to him about your build, he would know easily. I see the FCP's come up for sale occasionally, simply because they are more rifle then some bargained for. I have the FCP in.300 WM and it is a shooter.

Thx dgd6mm ... PTG sells a bolt face for it ... Midway carries it for about $55 or so.

Anybody know if there are even any savage long action large shank actions that exist outside of something that already has a 338LM barrel on it?

you'll need to open up the mag cutout . I've done a 300 Norma Mag without issue by changing the bolt head on a small dia action.
The rigby required welding two mag boxes together and correcting the bolt stop.

Thanks Spook - this tells me unless it started life as a 338LM I'll probably have a single shot unless I open it up and fiddle with the mag box (or have an actual 338LM mag or mag box) ...

Starting to sound like this might not be the most feasible approach ... perhaps someone else has first hand experience in doing this?

There isn't an action separate out there already for the lapua. If wanting a repeater, might as well buy a production one and sell off parts if it isn't a setup you want.

I might have what you want listed for sale.
PM me and I will send pictures. all you would need id BM and a LM PTG bolt face.
