I have both. I primarily use my phone but the GPS has some additional features that can be useful. The one I have for sale is actually my dads, I will be keeping mine...
You do NOT need cell service for onX. You just have to download any maps you want for "offline" mode. Put your phone on "airplane mode" to conserve battery and you're off to the races.!!! I've used it 2 years in Colorado with mostly zero cell service. It worked flawless. I use it all the time, even last week at Disney with the family!
I do have one for sale on here. The apps work great most of the time. I bought this more for a backup plan and don't need now.
