ok guys, I am acquiring my first magnum rifle to hunt with,a .264 win mag. I hunt in Louisiana and most probably will not shoot over 300 yards. any suggestions on a decent scope without breaking the bank, and also a recommended power.

Since you are not shooting over three hundred yards and most likely in low light situations, I would choose something in the 3 to 9 or maybe 3 to 15 power with a 50 mm objective.

Now which one? Can't go wrong with Swarovski, Zeiss, Leupold, and...........

I would look at a variable, of course, with a top magnification of 15 - 16X. The newer Bushnells and Nikons would do just fine. Even a used one would do, for what you're requiring.
I had a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 on a .300WinMag for a few years and it performed flawlessly. I dialed it out to 1000yds on several occasions. It never lost it's zero and was very dependable for a $300.00 scope.
What price range are you looking at? JohnnyK.
